once you work the bolt a bit, it runs fine... I got about 150 rounds through mine and its great. I run a little grease on mine, that helped out a bit... I don't think there is a rifle out there that can beat it for the price... the stock has a nice feel to it and is solid, the trigger is awesome and the AR mags are cheap compared to other bolt action mags for the different rifles, and most of the other rifles are only like 4 shot mags...
I mail ordered one because I too thought it would be a decent rifle for it's price range. I unpacked it when it arrived, handled it for about ten minutes and packed it back up and traded it away without shooting it. (did the same thing with a Savage Axis by the way). I'm glad I'm past the entry level rifles but my advice to you is save up a little longer and spend a couple extra bucks to get a lot better quality rifle.
I bought a BNIB Mossberg Varmint 5.56 about a month ago. I had some handloads left over from a Savage bolt gun so I gave them a try. After sighting in, was able to get 7, 5-shot groups all around 0.75 MOA, and some were better. For 500$ I'm very happy. Brand new and never fired the action wasn't too smooth, but after cycling the action about 100 times it improved quite a bit. I think that the fit and finish I actually quite nice. Although I'm a bit embarassed to have a Mossberg target rifle, I really can't say enough good things about it. I have never had a FTF or FTE and I have about 50 rounds fired so far. Trigger is very good IMO, I had no need to make an adjustment. Accutrigger engineering has totally changed the trigger market. For 500$ I'd give it a 9/10. Yes the bolt has a lot of play when fully retracted, but it has not caused any problems so far. I personnally feel it's underpriced for its value. I am trully suprised. With only 500$ invested, I can take that thing out in the field and not worry too much about putting some wear into it. I have become a bit tired of having thousands invested in a rifle, them not want to take it out and use it in the field.

IMO, that was a bad move on your part... I had my doubts too when handling it in the store, and I put off buying it for like 4 or 5 months... but im so glad I decided to give it a try! shoots MOA all day long, even with my 80 buck tasco scope and hand loads with no workup... I just went with a number between min and max loads and loaded up 100 rounds to blast off in a day cause I didn't have time to do load work up before a day of shooting we had planned... im sure I can get it at or under 1/2 MOA with proper loads...
Actually, I do have a better quality rifle already, a new unfired Rem700 XCR TLR. I just feel that I have too much money tied up in it, and by the time I put a laminate stock on it and maybe a magazine conversion, it's even more. A friend is considering the Mossberg, so I wondered about it for myself as well, and sell the Rem.
I don't think I made a mistake by getting rid of the Mossberg. 2 weeks after it was gone I bought a Sako Varmint Laminate. Now instead of maybe shooting 100yd 1/2" groups I know the rifle is capable of shooting 1/8" groups at the same distance. Like I said I'm past the entry level rifles and I know you can't compare a Mossberg with a Sako costing 3 times as much but for the couple extra hundred dollars I would buy a Tikka or Browning and skip the Mossberg with it's sloppy bolt,cheap plastic mag and a blued finish that if left for 3 days in the safe without oiling developed surface rust even though all I did was take it out of the package and stand it in there.(never had any of the other 25-30 guns that I've cycled through there do that) Right now I have so few days that I can get out to do some shooting even with a range right in my back yard that when I do get a bit of spare time I want it to be with a firearm I enjoy using and I couldn't see the Mossberg being one of them.
I wouldn't hesitate one bit on buying a mossberg mvp, buddy purchased one few months ago. He brought it out to the range along with a savage axis "kid's gun" and his 3x the price not going to mention name crown jewel. It was both the axis and mossberg's first time out and yousing the handloads for his crown jewel,we both were shocked at these rifles. The mossberg printed consistantly better groups than his crown jewel.The action wasnt as smooth but the lar mag option is really nice "reason he bought in first place". But what was more surprising is the savage, it hung with both of them. He's so impressed with the mossy that he wants to get the 308 version.
LAR 15, 10 rnd pistol mags work and the .50 cal plastics work also(15rnd). For the guy who hates reloading mags. I was getting MOA at 200 yards with Horniday V Max 40grain. Bagged a cpl yotes with it too.
The factory mag is pinned at 5 rounds. :/
