Mossberg Night Train

You get what you pay for. I haven't heard great things about the gun myself, particularly the optics it comes with. If money isn't a problem you could spend a little more and get yourself a tikka, savage, or remington.

If you want a cheap rifle this is the last gun you should be looking at! There are tons of horror stories about bolts coming apart and there are much better options out there.

- Stevens 200 - $350
- amazing accuracy for the money, and is technically a Savage Model 10 with tons of upgrades, and parts available!

- Savage Edge - $300
- Lots of reports of that fantastic Savage out of the box accuracy, but relatively new and a new design.

- Marlin XL7/XS7 - $400
- Lots of good reviews and very good accuracy. Trigger is a knock off accutrigger and is apparently pretty good.

Me I went with the Stevens 200, painted the stock, put a Bushnell 6-24 x 40mm scope on it and a Caldwell bipod. Shoots well under MOA and looks pretty bad ass, all for about $600!

I'm pretty sure if you looked and talked to enough people you would find/hear horror stories about any gun/rifle/pistol. I think Ex-Dragoon (as well as myself) is looking for someone who has the rifle or used the rifle to give their opinion.

buy a stevens if you want to stay in the price range of the mossberg. mossberg should stuck to shotguns (which are fantastic) rather than introduce the train wreck.

edit, holy crap, this isnt sporting arms, its the precision section. lol, just avoid that rifle.

Well when I was a newb I thought this gun looked like a great buy myself, and I did my research about this gun and im glad I did. All of my research lead me to look at 2 guns the stevens and the marlin. At that point the marlin was relatively new so I chose the stevens and never looked back. Seems that it is hard to find anyone upset about theire stevens 200 purchase and as the marlin was new to the market at the time i bought the stevens. If you dont want to take my advice fine, but i would be saving you the trouble of searching dozens of forums a d getting the same answers. There has been several reports on this site telling of bolts coming apart.

Don't know about the Night Train but I have a Mossberg 4x4 in .300 win mag and love it. I shoot eggs at 219 yds (longest our range supports) on a regular basis. Never a hiccup and very accurate. Going to put on a bipod boss soon and try to see its best on paper. Don't usually care about grouping but an curious with this one. I like the Mossberg rifle.
Research it out and pick what you think is best. Try to find some at local gun stores and try them on for size and feel.

Technically isn't the Stevens 200 a Savage 110 without the Accutrigger? :D

Exactly. that is why they are such a good deal. Again, kinda gray line as far as "precision" is defined but they make a good target rifle and some shoot extremely well. Others need a barrel swap before they shoot at all. That is the joy of factory rifles, they are like buying a lottery ticket.

Something else for the OP to consider is that in the future if you actually want a precision rifle all you have to do to get the Stevens shooting "precision" groups is get yourself a match grade barrel! Savages are known for the easy barrel swaps. $500 and some work to the stock and you can potentially be shooting better than any factory gun out there. All for under $1000.

You can buy the Mossberg and have lots of fun- for awhile.

The problem is if you do have lots of fun and decide you want to continue down the road of long range precision you will inevitably want to upgrade. The Mossberg will not be upgradeable, or be extremely difficult and expensive to upgrade. The resale value will be zero. So what little you saved by buying the Mossberg will now be wasted.

Look at the Remington SPS heavy barreled models. Varmint or Tactical. Both are good starters and can be easily and cheaply upgraded. With enough time and patience either can be a considerable competitor in the long range world. They also have good resale values.

If your just planning on screwing around and don't plan on getting 'serious' then get the Mossberg. There's nothing wrong with just having fun, but I'll bet you will regret it down the road. ;)
