I got a Mossberg Patriot in .308. I noticed when walking with the rifle on my back with the barrel facing up that the bolt randomly opens.

i want to use this gun for hunting and don't want anything to get stuck or broken.

Any help would be appreciated!

That isn't unusual with many bolt action rifles.

Engage the safety when the bolt is closed and it will be locked shut until the safety is disengaged

Sepko, how are you carrying this rifle in such a fashion that the bolt is being lifted while you're walking??

This can happen in extremely close quarters in brush but down a trail???

I've seen this happen a lot with some types of carriers on quads.

The cocked bolt spring tension should keep enough pressure on the lugs to hold the bolt closed under most conditions while still enabling a quick loading cycle. Good idea.

I got that rifle end of November. First time it happened to me walking in a open field to sight it in. With the barrel facing up just, with the gun slung around my shoulder and carrying an ammo box. It's happened a couple other times carrying it that way, when I need my hands free. Seems to just bounce out from the force of walking. As I've tried my best not to hit the bolt and it still pops out.

I had an Antonio Zoli that was licensed copy of a Husqvarna that did the same thing. I really liked that rifle as the action was as smooth as oiled glass.

I eventually sold it to a fellow and made sure he was aware of the problem.

With the AZ, the bolt would lock closed when the safety was engaged but that led to a few interesting moments, right when I least needed them to occur.

Glad the suggest fix by cosmic is working for you.

If you go onto the Mossberg site, this seems to be an issue, albeit uncommon with some of these rifles.

Thanks for the insights. Wasn't quite sure if it was something that was common on most rifles or just mine.

I got it for a decent price and i like how the action feels really smooth but just not a fan of the bolt popping out.

You won't be disappointed with that rifle. I've seen a few at the range and they shoot very well if the shooter knows what they're doing, even with average off the shelf ammo.
