My old 12 guage is getting really tired and I was looking at replacing it with...
A Mosserg model 835 Ulti-mag.
Has a muzzle break?choke tubes, fibre optic sights, vented rib andis drilled and tapped
for a scope.Also takes the 3 1/2 inch shells.
Looks like a decent shotgun but dont know much about them, and was wondering what
everyone thought of them?
Good?Bad?Ugly?
thanxs for your input

The 535 is a pump in 3.5". I have 2. Wood and blue combo with open sighted slug barrel and the 3 barrel combo in camo. Back bored barrels are larger diameter then typical 12 ga guns. Some say it improves steel shot patterns. I have yet to see a real difference. Neither compare to my 10 ga's patterns.

Pretty sure if I buy one of these it wont be shooting steel shot.
I dont hunt waterfowl,YET,lol.
Want it to replace my old sxs 12 guage for on the place for vermin and using out camping.
Been looking for a 10 guage but holy hannah are they expensive!
So mainlly as far as this gun will be shooting in 20 yards max.
Really appreciate the info you have provided me,annd any more you can give,is greattly appreciated!!
thanxs!!

3.5" 12 ga guns are not needed. A 3" gun is just fine. I still find I use 2 3/4" most of the time anyway. The mossberg 500 3 barrel combo would do u just fine. It gives you a nice solid reliable pump 3" chamber and 3 barrels and 4 choke tubes. The 28" vent rib with chokes is great for hunting and clays. The slug barrel is there for fun thumping and big game hunting and the short turkey barrel is great for when u wish a shorter overall package. The 500 series has many aftermarket parts stocks and barrels and can be had in wood or synthetic. If price is a concern there's the maverick which is basically a mossberg 500 with a crossbar safety instead of a tang safety. Barrels and butt stocks are interchangeable and they start out at $219 brand new.
As for steel shot all new mossbergs can take it just don't use a turkey choke with steel shot and no worries

Went in and fondled the 835 again,REALLY liked the feel of it has the shorter barrel with fibreoptic sights.
Looked at the Maverick?didnt feel as nice as the 835,or shopdidnt have the 535 in so couldnt compare.
Was one with a flashlight built into the pump slide and it felt awful.Bothme and the wife felt the 835 felt
the best and come up the nicest, but going to hold off awhile, maybe he will bring in a 535.Your probablly
right about only needing a 3 inch. But since thy first came out i always wanted to try one.KInda like the
ten guage, really wanna try one ofthose too.
Also why cant you usesteel shot in a turkey choke?

Also why cant you usesteel shot in a turkey choke?

It's too tight. Turkey shootin' is generally done with a more than Full choke. Steel doesn't compress like lead (and it's not as slick). Depending on the shot size and type, and the particular gun and choke, the shot could jam up as it's trying to leave the barrel, leading to poor patterns, barrel damage, or possibly catastrophic failure. It's usually given that, unless you're using a specialty choke tube designed for tight steel, you shouldn't shoot steel through a tighter constriction than Modified.

Steel is used mostly where it's mandated by Law, as in waterfowl hunting; if given the choice, people would rather stick to lead.

If the 835 feels good buy it. Shotgunning is all about fit. Red answered your question perfectly. I won't add to that but where are u located. If close to me u can try my 10 ga guns and my 535s. I'm in south west Ontario

Been shooting a 835 three barrel combo with two stocks for the past 7 years.. It is def my go-to gun.. swings nice, feels great for fit and love the ported, backbored barrels with fiber optic sights... You really can't go wrong. Mine is a workhorse for sure.. ducks, deer, turkeys,, whatever, it's ready and never had a failure.

Thanxs for the offer brybenn really appreciate it,but I a lil bit too far away..
I live in central B.C.
Thats interesting about the chokes tho, didnt know that and thanxs for the reply.
What I use is mostlly heavy shot,BB's or bigger.Occasional slug.

I have an 835 Turkey with a 20 inch barrel and put on a poly-choke adjustable choke tube, best workhorse shotgun ever. With that combo I can instantly switch from open choke rabbit to super full turkey by just turning the dial. I find the back-bored barrel AWESOME with patterning big shot like buckshot. At the IC setting, I was getting all 8 pellets from a 000 buck 2-3/4 inch load in a pie plate at a full 40 yards! A friend of mine had a similar gun and his patterned really tight as well.
The only caveat with the over-bored barrel is that you can't safely shoot rifled slugs out of it but I have other guns for that anyways. All in all, the 835 is a really sweet setup.
