ok so i'm looking at picking up a new riflle in the next couple of week and looking to keep it under $400 so i've got it down to these 4

Mossberg 100 ATR
Remington 770
Savage Edge XP
Stevens 200

now i'm looking at getting it in .308 and it would be mostly for hunting.

So between these 4 which one should it be???

Well the remington in universally considered to be an enourmous lemon so don't even touch it.

The Mossberg is well reviewed by those who own them, but hated by those who don't, they do have a fairly heavy trigger that you would want reworked by a smith.

The new savage edge has been well received, is supposed to be a nice rifle.

The stevens 200 Is generally considered to be the ultimate low-end rifle. Good quality action and barrel, although the factory trigger could use some work, and the factory stock is as floppy as a wet noodle.

In the same class as the rifles on your list, but (IMHO) better than them all is the Marlin XS7. Just as good quality and accuracy as the savage/stevens products, but comes with a fully adjustable (and really quite nice feeling) trigger.

I'd go to the store and try holding the stevens, savage and marlin, and base your decision on what feels better in your hands. They are all good rifles.

If you can manage a bit more $$ the Thompson Center Venture is great bang for the buck an so are the Weatherby Vangaurds. Probably gonna be around $600. You can keep your eye's open for a used one. The S&W ibolt looks promising too, but I haven't heard much about that one.

Google "mossberg ATR bolt defect" before you buy one. Apparently they've fixed the "press-fit-bolt-handle-that-falls-apart" issue on the ATR2, but I'm not sure whether they've fixed the "weak-extractor-which-breaks-after-a-few-rounds" issue.
Seriously, anyone who designs a bolt which is splined to accept the bolt handle, but neglects to put matching splines on the handle...

I looked at the Remington 770 the other day was absolutely shocked by how sloppy the bolt is on it. I honestly thought it was going to break just by cycling it...

I just ordered a mossberg ATR 100 Night Train, so I will let you know how it is when I get it, hopefully doesnt have any of the problems as listed above.

When I had my mossberg it shot great, just the heavy trigger (and overall heavy rifle! I had the 4x4 with walnut stock). But now that I have an XS7 I wouldn't go back, nice and lightweight, fantastic trigger, super accurate, and the action feels great too. But nothing wrong with the mossberg's if that's what your budget allows(I think cabelas just had them on sale for $259)

I have 2 ATR's. One in .30-06, one .308 Night Train. Both are great rifles. No problems with the night train, but had a weak extractor spring in the '06. Fixed it NP. Warranty by the dealer, not bothered with going to Mossberg, had it back in 3 weeks. While I have no complaints about either of these, ...
I also own a savage 111 in .243. I got it for my wife last year and if I were ever to do this again, I'd go with the Savage. It is a great little gun package for the price and comes with an adjustable trigger that is easy to use. I got nothing but good to say about them. WSS has them for about $460.00. I am sure that sponsors here can do as well or better.

just a quick update I ended up putting some extra money into it and got a remington 700 SPS varmit
