I picked up a Mossberg 590A1 and it feels like a great shotgun. There are some spots on the receiver that I cannot get to come off. They're smooth in texture, almost seem like they're the same texture as the rest of the receiver.
The receiver material is aluminum alloy. Any ideas? I have tried CLP and Ballistol and neither seemed to do much.

Got it off the EE.
Boss, did it take a lot of effort to remove from yours?
Since it's second hand technically (NIB but not from a dealer) will mossberg be of any help since its second hand?

I never had these spots on my shotgun , i think the poster above did .. Mossberg might fix it but it would be a long process at a warranty centre .. Did the seller on the EE disclose these spots? if not he owes you a refund or some money back .. Try a really good solvent like gas, varsol , kerosene.

Thank-you for the replies. I went to my local store to find a stronger solvent. I had been using CLP, Hoppes # 9 oil, Remington Bore Bright, and Ballistol. Nothing would even do anything, even though I was giving a good scrub with an old cotton t-shirt.

Then I saw a product called Wipe-Out Tactical Advantage on the shelf. Expensive stuff but apparently quite good. It says for steel, but on their website it says ok for some aluminum like AR15s, etc. I put it on in an inconspicuous area and used a softer nylon brush. Stain came right off. So I was brazen enough to just brush down the whole receiver and then wiped it down quickly. Part of me was scared I was going to strip the anodizing. Here's the before & after, though.

Whatever it was, none of my solvents would even touch it, but this Wipe-Out took it off (except tiny little scratches in the receiver but oh well, it's a friggin' 590A1 not a Holland & Holland!)
