mossburg 500 vs rem 870?

hey guys!

i have an 870 wingmaster (older one) and have had no problems with it, but it is a bit out of date, it has a fixed full choke, and a plain barrell. I also live in southwestern ontario with no deer rifle season, but there is a shotgun season, so... I was planning on buying an 870 combo with a fully rifled barrel in the fall, but today i ran into a good deal, a mossburg 500 combo in full camo with 3 choke tubes, ported barrel, and a fully rifled barrel with rifle sights. they only want 400$ brand new. it is a new store opening up here in town, and this is their grand opening special. I know this price beats the hell out of the 870 combo, but is that a great price for the mossy? and has anyone had any problems with mossburg guns? what are your opinions?

Like Claven said, if you already have an 870, don't fix what ain't broken. The Mossberg 500 is pretty freaking reliable by all reports. It should be better buil than my Maverick, and my Maverick (I calls her Mavis) is holding up fine.
 
Put the 400.00 towards some barrels and extras for the 870. I have both and the Mossy is NO Wingmaster. I like the Mossy well enough but it is a club compared to the 870. Again, just my two cents.....

The wingmaster is too old and needs to go, i need to buy two new barrels for it, rifled and smooth with chokes, I know you can buy rifled choke tubes, but i want that extra bit of accuracy that comes with fully rifled barrels. by the time I buy thesse 2 new barrells i will have already spent over 400$ and still be left with beat up old furniture. also, the wingmaster is only chambered for 2.75"
 
too old? come on my wingmaster is way older than me (20 years). I still use 'er every deer season if Im pushing bush. Search some of the local gun shops for either a smoothbore barrel or a fully riffled barrel. My barrel on the wingmaster says 2 3/4 and shorter shells! You can kill everything just the same with 2 3/4" shells. Find someone in the area that will put a choke system in the barrel.

But then thats me, Mossbergs are nice but like said before nothing like a wingmaster. But its your money
 
I am totally happy with my 870. My brother in law bought it for me when I turned 12, registered it when I turned 18. There are sooooo many accessories for them and many different options. It always goes bang, feeds, and hits the target. I dont know about the mossy as I have never owned one, but this was just my experience with an 870.
 
Both are great, while I like most people prefer 870's.

I guarantee you can find a rifled barrel on this site's exchange forum for less than a couple hundred, and have the existing barrel threaded for chokes if it's thick enough and come out ahead. If you ever manage to wear out an 870 I'll salute you.

I personally like rejuvenating the golden oldies in the collection, a buddy just did a complete refinish for me on my old Cooey, my first gun, and I went over the stock sanding up to 1500 grit and applied dubious numbers of tung oil coats, the thing went from ick to better than new :)

Buying new's never bad either though, supports the industry :)
 
Id go for the mossy 535ATS 3.5" chamber with 28" smooth bore and 24" rifled barrel for $314. couple things good about the 535, its got the safety on top where they all should be and it's drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

Coin toss.

Hold them both and see how they feel. For me, the 870 was worth the extra $, for you, maybe not, or you might like the 500 better.

But for that price, for a combo, in camo, I'd probaby go for it.
 
That is a good price for that combo... and it is a new gun.... why not buy it and sell it if you don't like it ? You won't lose much on it and I am sure you would sell it fast. Personally, I prefer Mossbergs (especially 590 models) but Rem 870 shotguns still have their pluses (12.5in barrel = big plus for me).
 
I may have erred in my earlier post... I just checked my Wh. Sp. catalogue and that combo is listed at $399.95 normal price. As such, don't let this super fantastic gone tomorrow blowout pricing be a determining factor for your decision as it can be had elsewhere any day of the year :D

Wow, prices are sure dropping. I thought it was a good price cause I paid $430 from wholesale for my 870 supermag a couple of years ago.
 
Mossberg or Remington = OK.

But, you already have an 870, can you say "INTERCHANGEABLE BARRELS"?

Why not just buy extra barrels and run what you have? Unless, you want an excuse to buy another one.

Get the Mossberg combo.

Later on you can get a Nova, a Condor, a BPS, a 1300, an MP-153, an 11-87, another 870...get one of each...

You can always count on your fellow CGN'ers to help you compose the appropriate rarionalization to buy more shotguns.

Let us know how well the Mossberg shoots as I haven't seen many posts about its performance here on CGN would like to know more about it before composing my own appropriate rationalization (which shouldn't be difficult) and the necessary enjoyable marital strategy (i.e. weekend at a Bed & Breakfast with the wife, encouraging her to go on a shopping spree for clothes).

I have had both, currently only have the mossberg.
You can't go wrong with either model, the wingmaster looks nicer.
I but my shotties through hard use and I have never had a problem with my mossberg. I've had it for about 12 years now.
 
I bought a 535 combo to replace an 870 supermag- great price, cycles perfectly and fits me well.. Which is most important (I'm 6'4")

Shoulder them both or toss a coin. I hated the Rem for jamming etc, but others say that about the Mossberg for which has been flawless this far. The barrel has two beads which is nice, and the rifled barrel has williams rifle sights.
