A buddy showed me his mossy 500 when he didn't realize there was a snow plug in the barrel. He was rather vague about the whole thing...

There's a shotgun barrel in the local gunsmith shop with a split. It was a recreation of a small ice pellet frozen to the side of the barrel. Apparently, it doesn't even need a full obstruction to burst a barrel.

Don't shoot your shotgun, lean it against a tree while it's snowing or raining in freezing temperature and then use it again.

this works so does duct tape and condoms work as well. splitting and fragmenting barrels is why I like older guns they have more ductile barrel made from softer steel where modern guns use chromoly steel i think this is because they want barrels to be harder then steel shot alloys like 4130 and 4140 are ok if they are welded and heat treated right(they should be normalized after welding). older guns barrels will bulge before they burst where it seems new gun barrel split or fragment
