I am looking to purchase a rifle in 17 HMR. Probably will be a medium to heavy barrel version of some sort. Any feedback would be appreciated about which rifle to buy. Will consider just about any make. I want a very accurate plinker for backyard use. Are the Ruger bolts accurate? Maybe one of the Savages or Remington 502T?? Thanks. Art

I had a Savage for a while. It was very very accurate - 1/2" or better - with the vmax ammo, and not so much with the Speer TNT ammo.

It really varies rifle to rifle. I had a 597 semi that would outshoot some of the customs at the club (and piss people off...BIG time! :D) But another guy bought the same gun as me....wouldn't group as well. Also, I watched three guys with brand new NEF singles. One would print clover leafs, while the other two wouldn't (they swapped around)

Put it this way: I've never seen an IN-accurate .17, they all shoot really well. Buy what you like, and try lots of different ammo.

Savage model 93, with bull barrel. Will shoot 1/2" at 100 on low winds days with Vmax ammo (Hornady, Winchester, Remington, CCI, Federal). Accuracy is good up to 150 yards, then results are degrading pretty quickly, due to low bullet weight.

Not so good results with TNT ammo.

I have a Savage 93 Laminated thumbhole and stainless bull barrel, also has the accu trigger. It shoots just about everything into 3/4" or less.Very pleased with it.
