I am wondering if CCI 30 grain, 40 grain or winchester 30 grain will be the ammunition to buy. Looking for some knowledge from others with same caliber.

Also, what is your luck on expansion, this will be a gopher gun and from what I have seen from gel tests, none of the WMR ammunition expands. Already have a .17 hmr but wanted to try something different.

Don't know about gophers. CCI 30 grain V-max and CCI 40 grain kill any Raccoon or skunk that I point it at. I'm assuming it would do the same with gophers. Don't know if it expands. I just know anything small gets hit with it dies. ;)

If you choose the correct ammo for the task at hand the gophers will explode (hollow points).
By choosing the correct ammo I mean what is readily available in your shopping area.
We are in a bit of an ammo supply slump in case you hadn't noticed.
Never mind the gel tests, that is for something completely different.

I don't have that firearm, but have a bolt-action Marlin in 22WMR and Hornady 30gr is the most accurate I've tried at 100 yards. The Remington green box 22WMR was pretty good too. Federal 50gr were surprising accurate. The CCIs I tried were OK. Winchesters? Not so much.

Not sure if it makes sense, as I don't know how many companies actually make their own 22WMR ammo (I assume CCI and Federal made by the same company as both owned by VISTA) but I did buy like 10 different brands/types of 22WMR and tried them all. I've standardized on 30gr Hornady and 50gr Federal.

YMMV. Just my $0.02 worth

Aren’t gel test to ensure/test expansion and penetration. The 17 hmr completely explodes in the gel and may other small calls still mushroom.

Hi , your best bet is to try and get a box of each ''if u can''. I had a Savage BJR in 22 mag, it shot best with the CCI 40 gn. HP maxi mag. Groups at 100 yards were 1''-1 1/2'' consistently.
The CCI 30gr. V-Max shot next best followed by the Hornady 30 gr. V- Max. Both the CCI 30 and 40 shot hotter then stated. I never shot the Winchester or Remington rounds.
One thing you have to remember is there are no match rounds for 22 mag to up its accuracy. So find what shoots best for your needs. Where are you from.

So, are you more concerned about destroying gophers or testing the expansion of bullets?
17hmr imo is designed to blow up on impact and destroy those pesky rodents.
I read the post as two separate questions.

A quick kill, and minimal ricochets. So a rapidly expanding bullet.
