Hi everyone, I'm looking at buying my first .22 pistol. Any thoughts on the best for out-of-the-box accuracy and reliability? My club has .22 pistol competitions with iron sights only. I was looking at a Walther P22 or Beretta 71. Any thoughts?

I have bought several 22 pistols in the last 6 years. The best one I had was the Beretta 87 Target. Yes it is expensive but this was the most accurate gun and the easiest to clean. The rugers are very nice but a pain to disasemble & reasemble.

Maybe I should have stated *budget* .22 pistol. The S&W 41 would be my first choice given the funds. Perhaps some suggestions in the $500 range?

Margolin......under $400.00 and was used for many years as a training pistol by the Soviets. Adjustable front and rear sights and a blind man can disassemble and reassemble. Perfectly balanced.

Unless you already know you're a possible candidate for the next Olympic team any of the commonly found rimfire handguns will do you just fine. The only feature you'll want to get for this level of bullseye competition is one of the models with the longer barrel. It's not that the barrel itself is more accurate. It's the baseline length between the front and rear sight which makes it easier for YOU to be as accurate as you can.

Budget? Then I'd suggest that it's between one of the longer barrel Rugers and the longer barreled Buckmark if you want new. Another option would be one of the used High Standard target pistols.

The Margolin is a good suggestion as well. A little more off the wall but it should do the job just fine given that it was intended for this sort of shooting.

Another option I've seen is the Walther SP22. It looks like a cheap paintball gun or something from a bad grade B science fiction movie. But if you can get past that aspect it's a pretty darn good shooting gun.

Ruger bull barrel, either Mk. 1, 2, or 3. Right out of the box: good trigger, very accurate, very reliable (eats any ammo you feed it). Don't worry about cleaning it: it'll run thousands of rounds before you need to worry about it, you can clean most of it without disassembling it, and if you follow the instructions, it's not all that difficult to re-assemble.

Yup. I have one (I've owned it for 30 years), and in all that time it's been the most accurate (Olympic-quality accuracy) & most reliable pistol I've ever used, hands down. And, I've had a LOT of pistols (and fired many, many others I didn't own). They're not always easy to find, though - have to search the 'used' section of gun shops to find one. If you get one, you'll NEVER want to part with it. Mine has introduced a LOT of people to shooting.

Failing that, I'd go along with the Ruger Mk.1 bull barrel. Also reliable, and very accurate. They've been around for a long time, always popular, and there's a ton of info, parts and mods out there for them.

in your budget you cannot beat a ruger bull barrel. If you double it, a CZ Kadet is simply unbeatable, for reliability, functionality....it will digest any ammo without issue, which is NOT common in 22 semi autos... its very accurate, and it stays cleaner than most.
