Before I get a true Varmint rifle (in the 10lb range), I'd like to get something more versatile that I can shoot from the standing position (for silhouette) and still have respectable accuracy up to 500 yards.

This raised an interesting question- given a weight restriction, what would be the most accurate out of the box bolt action?

So far have narrowed down the choices to the Savage Model 14 American Classic (.308) or the Tikka T3 Lite (.308).

Does anyone have any experience with these models or other recommendations?

Could be CZ Ultimate hunter. The rifle comes in one calibre(300winmag)and is equiped with a Nightforce scope-price Ithink is somewhere around $3000usd.They may have edged out Browning as most accurate.

Stevens 200 in 7-08. That will easily make your weight target even with a target scope on top. 7-08 is a great silhouette rd. Load down a bit would help with those 10shot strings. I would think 162gr Amax at 2400 to 2500fps would be an ideal ram load.

My favorite choice would be the 260 but that doesn't come in Savages. The 243 and heavy bullets would also work but no factory rifle comes with a twist fast enough for the 105/107/115gr heavies.

The 308 offers pretty poor ballistics and will kick more.

With proper bedding, changing or tuning the trigger, and other basic things, it most certainly has the potential to shoot sub MOA as far as you want to go.

dlau,

I second what Jerry said. I have a Stevens 200 in 7mm-08 and it shoots well under an inch with every bullet I have loaded for it so far, 120 Barnes X, 140 Nosler Partition, 160 gr Nosler Accubond and 165 gr Sierra BT.

These are all hunting bullets, so I have no doubt that good match bullets would be exceptionally accurate.

The rifle weighs 6 1/2 pounds w.o. scope and just under 7 1/2 with a 12X Redfield.

The factory trigger is adjustable and mine breaks clean at just over three pounds. I don't see how you can go wrong for less than $400 including tax and shipping. :)
