In your experience, what slugs are most accurate through a smoothbore?

My 870 has a Cylinder Bore bbl, and I find most rifled slugs I try print about 6" at 50y.

I'm wondering if I should have it worked to accept choke tubes, and run an improved or modified choke in it.

12 Ga Mossberg 500 "Bear Repellent" with 20" Cyl bore and bead only, 3 shots Winchester slugs @ 50 paces. Throw the gun to the shoulder and pull the trigger as fast as if shooting at game [ practical accuracy ...
never mind the bench rest stuff ]

Target was tacked to an 8" tree ....
The hits were right on point of aim, group was about 3".
After the third shot the tree fell over.

That seemed like good enough "accuracy" for me.

I've used the Brenneke slugs successfully in both my Mav88 and Browning A5 light 12 for years. Aveage groups were in the 4" range at 100 yards. Both were modified choke barrels (non-removable). Try different choked barrels, it's probably cheaper than having the barrel threaded and purchasing chokes. Once you have a few barrels, try as many different brands of foster-type slugs to see which ones you gun likes. Good luck,

This is actually for a tactical shotgun, however it is what I'd take if I were going after deer in a shotgun only area.

Best field marksmanship story ever :).

My Reminton 870 has a 20" smoothbore slug barrel that used to be a 30" full choke. I had a gunsmith cut it back and install sights.

I have tested it with Challenger slugs, Federal foster-style slugs and Winchester foster-style slugs. It shoots the cheap Winchesters the best. The worst were the Challengers. The problem with the Challengers seemed to be that the attached wad did not always want to stay attached.

I have a Remington 1100 with factory smooth bore deer barrel. Shoots Brennekke slugs in about 5" at 100 yards with open sights. The second best were Winchester 1 oz fosters. The worst were Remington 1oz foster slugs. Having said that any deer within 100 yards is in alot of trouble. (broadside not moving of course, I am not Matthew Quigley)

cheers Darryl

I found that Winchester's 1 oz Fosters were hands down the most accurate from a smooth bore - palm sized groups at 100 were the norm. The Brenneke I don't think are as accurate, but for my purposes it doesn't matter because they just have to work inside of 50.

And yet in my model 870 smoothbore with rifle sights the Challengers are far and away the best grouping slugs that I have tried. Three-inch three-shot groups @ 75 yards.

Just goes to show that each gun has its own tastes and preferences.

That is soo true! Brenneke's don't work for some but work awesome in my Winchester. At one time I was casting my own (Lee 1oz Drive Key slugs) and they shot like absolute $h*t thru my rifled choke as well as a borrowed fully rifled Mossberg 500. But for others they worked remarkably. So now I'm just sticking to Win. 1oz/15 pack from Crappy Tire;)( just means I'll go thru more solvents cleaning out the leading!
