Quoting others that are in the know...

2006 is a great year to work with. I'd even consider one of those for rebarreling, as a matter of fact, I have rebarreled that vintage with great results! Yup, it was a Krieger Hvy barrel I put on that fine receiver. :D

Cheers and keep helping the noobs around here!

2005-2007 were after any early teething problems and before the rash of shorty problems. I've had 2 2006's and they were the tightest, best shooting Norc's I've seen. The gas system alignment on my latest 2006 is a thing of beauty. If you have a chance to get one, give it a look over, but it should be good!

The receivers of the 2005 to 2007 series of imports are gems. The rifles themselves have all the common QC issues generally and not as tight of headspace as we have seen in batches like the 2009's and some of the newer marstar ones.... But as a builder and tweaker of a great many of these rifles, when I build a keeper on a norinco receiver.... Preferably it's on a 2005 to 2007 ;)

Is there going to be an increase in quality?
I think it will be interesting to see if and when any new ones arrive in Canada, since all the ones produced up until the present time were manufactured with receivers that were made most likely thirty years ago. It is interesting because the M14 receiver is maybe the most complex rifle receiver ever to be made and requires a large number of machining operations. What it is often referenced is the current quality control on these rifles which seems at odds with that required for the manufacturing of the receiver, however that was done by different generations of workers at the factory, so it will be interesting to see how the new ones turn out if and when they arrive. The Chinese type 305 are probably the best selling semi automatic center file newly manufactured rifle sold in Canada for the last ten years, with maybe more than thirty five thousand sold, so it is not surprising that quality control issues show up with these rifles on CGN, due to the number of them. One interesting fact I recently came across is that the chrome plating currently done on barrels made in the States is not as wear resistant as it used to be when the M14 was originally produced, because of environmental requirements that now exist. I expect this is not the case with the mainland Chinese ones, also the Chinese M14's are the only ones ever produced with forged receivers, bolts and operating rods other than TRW manufactured M14's, which also had hammer forged barrels. If the new Chinese M14's ever arrive it will be interesting to see if they have hammer forged barrels, since the T97 has a hammer forged hard chrome lined barrel.

I can speak for only myself here. I have a 2009 model. It was in stock condition when I received it. My flash hinder was not welded. My barrel indexed properly. Op rod guide it tight. Rear sights worked reasonably well. No bolt failures.

As far as I am concerned it is a great model. The only thing I have yet to check is headspace. I have not shot brass cased ammo out of it yet. Only steel cased.

Maybe one day I will shoot brass ammo and send it to Barney. No rush though.

I have a 2009 polytech marked Bell lifestyles.I done much to it.
The usual things, sights,US wood stock, the oprod spring & guide.
and flash hider. 1500 rds no hickups, all federal blue box. It had no
issues when I got it. I have had others, all had something wrong.
Nothing that could not be fixed though. Regards 375rum

Wow.... Thanks for the steps down amnesia lane. Where did all the time go?

I’m looking back now over a couple of decades of the Norinco joy..... I would still search for a 2007 to do any rebarrel jobs or builds because they never give me any silly surprises. But it’s 2021 now and this world (and any world) has changed so all bets are off.

Please be strong and be safe out there, my friends.

Peace Be To Journey!

Cheers, Barney

I've still got my E2 build hung up waiting to be free...

I went with buying 2007 guns
They seemed to be very well finished etc
At the time the cost new and used was very reasonable
They also function as they should
