The four port brake was introduced in 1942 as a production expedient. When SVTs were refurbed a brake is a brake so earlier dated rifles will be found with them. Military armourers are notoriously insensitive to the needs of collectors
I think its whatever you like. I have both and the 6 hole looks nicer but the 2 hole is easier to clean around. What about stocks? I have an original stock and an AVT stock, like the AVT better. There are naval versions with a different sling attachment (usually in AVT configuration) that are really sweet.
I was at the range with my 6 hole SVT today and am impressed with how well the break works. And yes, it's loud. I had a guy beside me shooting a CZ858 with an aftermarket brake on it. Everytime he shot, it gave me a blast of wind in the face. It seemed to be coming back off his muzzle at a 45 degree angle. But it was a nice wind. Warm and smelled like guns.
