I've got a ruger american ranch in 7.62x39. It's my bush/quad rifle. I'm looking for a reasonably priced bombproof optic for shooting minut of deer up to 200m. I was thinking of a fixed 4x scope. I dont know much about red dots.

Looking for suggestions.

I have yet too try it.. but

VORTEX CROSSFIRE RED DOT SIGHT, 2 MOA

I emailed VORTEX and asked them if it will handle the recoil of 35 Whelen... they said no problem

Why the red dot for me .... can see the dot with out glasses ... almost zero ...Parallax Free .... 2 moa .... so at less than 200 yards should put it on the table

I think the same as you. Fixed 4x. A long time ago we would read of 3x scopes being popular for your application but there aren’t a lot of these around and newer 4x scopes have good field of view and eye relief ... and can be found reasonably priced. You may wish to also consider a heavier duplex type reticle as well simply because it is sometimes harder to ‘find’ a thinner reticle when you are in a hurry... particularly in heavier bush when branches can compete with the reticle.

I'd offer up an old Leupold M8 style scope on the first choice.
Lots of them old steel tubed Weavers around.
Find one cheap'n'nuff and send it into Trace for a tewn-up.

You up for a peep sight set up?
Skinner.

Good call. I'd say that $350 would be a reasonable price for this project. Are there any magnified red dots that would be a good option?

Peep sights are not out of the question, how would a guy put on a set? I dont want to go through a gun smith as they simple charge too much

No. Magnification is the opposite of what a reddot is for. Dots are fast and accurate enough. Magnified optics are slow(er) and more precise. With a bolt gun, follow up shots are not readily available, so a reddot is not ideal. A low power variable or fixed low power optic would be better suited.

As for bombproof and $350. It doesn't exist. Robust optics start at $750 and go up.

I disagree with a previous answer about magnified red dots... With a little practice they are still very fast and give some magnification. This was the entire reason the ACOG was developed and issued.

An ACOG is a little out of your price range, but Primary Arms makes a "poor man's ACOG"... I've seen these at our DSSMatches, and they hold up well for the price. CTCS has a Black Friday sale starting tomorrow, so maybe these will be included?? This one has a 7.62x39 specific reticle.

The ACOG is not a reddot sight. They do work very well. If you want mag then don't use a reddot. A fixed power optic like the ACOG or an LPVO are much better choices than a magnifier with dot or some low end magnified dot.

Definitely NOT Vortex. Most Durable scope for not super money is easily the SWFA fixed 10X or one of the other fixed powers. These were originally designed for the US Navy and their simplicity makes them super durable. the S&B, Kahles or US optics fixed 10x are even more durable especially the USO but cost significantly more.

Primary Arms prism sights would like a word. They tend to come in around the $350 - $550 range

2.5x: https://ctcsupplies.ca/primary-arms-2-5x-compact-ar15-scope-with-patented-cqb-acss-reticle/

...Or in a 7.62x39 / .300 Blackout reticle: https://ctcsupplies.ca/primary-arms-gen-iii-3x-compact-prism-scope-acss-7-62x39-300blk-cqb-reticle/

5x: https://ctcsupplies.ca/primary-arms-slx-5x36mm-gen-iii-prism-scope-acss-5-56-308-reticle/ or https://ctcsupplies.ca/primary-arms-gen-ii-5x-compact-prism-scope-illuminated-acss-5-56-308-reticle/

There are some amazing youtube vids of ridiculous torture tests on the Primary Arms Prism sights. One guy strapped it to his deck for two hurricaines in the US south atlantic coast, another took his underwater to like 400 feet deep and it didn't get any water infiltration (can't find the vid at the moment). They froze it in a block of ice and smashed it. Not just the 1x, the others too. It's been dropped, run over by jeeps, and baked in an oven at 170 degree Fahrenheit

They easily stand up to ACOGs in terms of durability, for about 2/3rds of the price.
