Thanks guys, I'm new to coyote hunting and I had three last winter. My smaller calibre scoped rifle is a .308 so that's why I asked. I don't want to start selling pelts and I only wanted to save a few to put in the house.
If you stay off the shoulder (albeit that's the best place to put em down), you might be okay with heavier constructed bullets and be able to salvage a pelt without too much sewing.
The Barnes solids are pointy enough to sew with, so if they don't hit a bone or tumble you might be able to save most of the hide. Given the cost of these bullets and the price for coyote pelts, each one harvested will probably cost you money.
I once shot a fox thinking the same thing, I was bear hunting at the time and smaked him in the ribs with a RN 180 at 2500 . . . it looked like someone threw a football through him. I imagine a coyote would do likewise.
