What is generally considered the most versatile size of shot for putting meat on the table, if you could only chose one? Does your answer change depending on 2 3/4 or 3" chamber?

No such thing really. 7 1/2 is great for upland game, but try using 7 1/2 steel on ducks or geese.

Get 7 1/2 for upland/clays

#4 steel for ducks

BB steel for geese

done.

Number 4 Hevi-shot, I have killed every thing from, Ruffies to Greater Canadas with them.

I have also done it with 7 1/2 Hevi-shot, just don't miss because you might aswell throw toonies if you do.

In the day it would have been 1 1/4oz No.4 lead by today's standards i don't believe there is such a load.

I don't believe that either!

I also don't like these 'if you can only choose one' type of threads. The good thing is that we do not have to or need to choose just one! With a shotgun bird game varies from bob white to greater Canada geese. Then there is a variety of loads that will work from deer to bears. :weird:

7.5 is great for clay but I do not use it for birds. It just is not big enough for the larger birds and hasn't enough power on moderate sized birds at longer range. It certainly has enough killing power for smaller birds but just too many tiny pellets and too much meat damage at closer ranges. On upland birds I use 4s, 5s or 6s depending on size and range. I am glad I don't have to limit myself to just one choice, but if I did it would be #4 shot.
