i am going to put a scope on my sporter, the 2 options seem to be the Bsquare mount or taking it to a gunsmith to get it drilled for mounts. there isn't a smith around where i am but time isn't an issue so if i decide to go this route i can put it off for a while.

any advice on what route to go?:)

If it is sportered beyond redemption then a drilled and tapped is probably correct, if there is any way of restoring then use a no drill! If it is a custom sporter then mounts may be available!

B Square and S&K are both no-gunsmithing style that use the rear sight crosspin hole and the charger bridge. Some guys swear by them, others swear at them. I have neither, so I don't have an opinion.

For what it's worth, the idea today is to try very hard to avoid drilling holes in otherwise un-buggered receivers. It is the receiver has been altered already, then there is no loss in making more holes.

I have used the S&K system on No 1 Mk 3 and No 4 Mk 1.

The No 4 system is very stable although the centerline of the scope is quite high - try using a cheekpad. Works well for me.

The No 1 system relies on a hokey ring around the front of the receiver so although no metal is removed you probably need to remove some wood & re-bed. I don't like it.

I had an SK on my old #5 and it sat way to high, no cheek weld with issued stock, need a longer face I guess. Milled and drilled a chunk of angle iron a la Steve Redgewell for my #4 works great and looks ok on a $50 gun.

i have one of the b-square type weaver mounts on my sporter simple instal you can do your self you may need to shim up the front where it attaches to the chargeing plate *right term?* make sure to use some blue locktite on all the screws and the proper fitting screwdrivers and it'll work perfectly and if you want to restore it later on you only have to remove the mount no drilling or tapping done to it

Personally, I have sold a lot of the S&K mounts and have installed them for others. Right now I am using an S&K on my own Number 4 and have NO qualms about recommending it to anyone. For my money the S&K is the better mount, even if a few bucks more. I think MilArm still handles them, and they make them for both the Number 4/Number 5 and for the old SMLE, but the mounts are different, so be sure which one you order. Have funs!

My No4 rifle was bubba'd beyond redemption, so I went with a drill and tap weaver TO1 mount. I did the drilling and tapping myself so much cheaper, but even if you take it to a gunsmith, the total cost is about the same as the non-D&T mounts. As an added bonus, it also sits lower than most of the no drill mounts, giving a better cheek weld with an original military butt stock. If the gun is at all restorable though this is probably not the best way to go, as it will affect your resale value with the milsurp crowd.

BTW, I considered the angle iron mount idea from 303british.com, but in the end the Weaver mount was easier and cheaper in my oppinion. Lots of great stuff on that site though. Anybody shooting 303Brit should check it out.
