So my next purchase is going to be an ultralight mountain rifle. Wonder what scopes would be recommended for an ultralight weight scope. I am kind of partial to vortex but am open to others as well.

The Swarovski Z3 3-9 is 12 oz. Leupold VX-2 ultralight 3-9 is 9.8 oz, and the VX-2 UL 2-7 is 8.5 oz.

Swarovski Z3 is a great suggestion. I went shooting with a customer of ours who had the Z3 3-10x42 BRX on his sheep rifle (Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker Carbon Fiber Fluted in 300WSM) and he was able to hit steel at 950 yards after some wind doping and ballistic calculating. I took a look through it and the clarity at those ranges was pretty amazing. Super bright and high detail. It's also only 12.7oz, which made his whole set up just around 7.5 pounds. If you can get your hands on one, I recommend checking it out and seeing if you like the glass quality because they are really great scopes.

I have 2 favorites in this category; a Leupold VXII 3-9-32 ultralight and a Swaro 3-10x42 BRX. Of the two I favourite the Swaro for clarity, practical magnification, and the reticle's ease of use in the field.

The new vortex razor line of hunting scopes is unreal! I met the reps the other day and they showed me a couple of them. I couldn't get over how clear the glass was and light weight the scope was. Great eye relief and wow the brightness! Decent price tag too for a high quality scope.

Some good suggestions listed above. What calibre are you shooting? Good choices: Leupold VX3 2-8x36, Zeiss HD 5 2-10x42 Rapid Z-600, Nikon Monarch 3 2.5-10x42

leupold fx2 6x36 simple and reliable.

Or the 6x42 FX111 model.

I used a couple of fixed 6x scopes and found them great, my main hunting scope was a Conquest 3x9x40 which I generally left at 6 power. I have never hunted UP in the mountains, but I suspect shots are not going to be under 100 yards and fixed 6 works great for that.

I would resist the urge to over magnify on a mountain rifle in particular as a heavy high magnification scope tends to make eye relief a bit twitchy and messes with the balance of a nice rifle.
