I want to mount my Docter micro dot on a CSA carbine , whats the best railed upper handguard for VZs . I want something i can remove for cleaning and holds zero . Was looking at the NEA from SFRC . also seen the BC tactical model how does it compare ?

I have the BC tactical handguard, but I haven't mounted anything on it to date. I can say that it is very well built and I purchased it because of it's reputation.

bc tactical is a good rail, you have to hand fit it to your rifle though so if you get one remember to go in little bits at a time. B&T makes a good rail but its quite spendy

I own half a dozen different mounts, pros and cons to all.
A. Nea railed handguard is OK, make sure it is a fairly tight fit, or it will wobble. Upside is, it holds zero, and can do lower third co-witness with many low sitting optics.
B. Nea barrel attached rail segment. Holds zero, doesn't need to be removed for cleaning, but will mark the barrel when attached, so you better like it. They are disco'd, but can be found on the EE.
C. Nea rear rail/ar stock adapter. Holds zero, doesn't need to be removed for cleaning, puts the optic closer to the eye (which I prefer), but is also disco'd, and hard to find.
D. BC tactical rear sight base. Holds zero, but replaces rear leaf sight. Has to be modified to fit 7.5" vz-58 because of tiny piston.
E. CSA side mount rail system. Holds zero, is easily removed, can be left on when cleaned (rear cover juuuust slips by), allows longer optic, close to the eye, but sits high. Iron sights still visible.
F: Railed top cover. Holds zero, but is a little bulky. Some like this option best, but I find it ruins the guns lines. Fashion/function fight.

Thanks great info ! I prefer a dot sight farther from my eye than the railed dust cover or side rail type mount will allow so i think a railed handguard or BC tactical rear sight base rail is the way to go for me . I did try to contact BC tactical and order the rail that replaces the rear sight but there was such bad and slow comms from those guys after a week of sending emails and only a couple vague reply's and they confused me with another customer i gave up lol. .. I dont really need the bottom handguard and SFRC has the top NEA handguard only for $85 . So if it holds zero then it will do i guess but will the NEA top handguard hold zero even when you dont have the bottom guard ?

Oh yeah, no problem. I don't like the NEA lower handguard, I use the factory wood. Better insulation, when you start putting steel down range.

Had the Nea upper and lower, yes it co witnesses lower 3rd but that's about it, everything else about it I didn't like. It uses a tiny little Allen screw to hold the top on, very easy to loose or strip it, constantly have to worry about keeping it tight and can't use thread lock because you need to loosen it to take it off to clean the gas system. Horrible design. The lower I had was completely out to lunch in terms of its cross pin hole, it was nearly an 8th inch off and I had to butcher it hammering the pin in and out.

Bc tac, awesome, everything from its machining detail to fitment was perfect and it takes apart just like the factory without having to screw around with any tools. Plenty of rails to go apesh$@t with and mount anything you can think of on it. Robust enough to really wrap your hand around it, yet not too bulky (Nea was so small and thin it just felt weird to grab onto, fingertips nearly touched I could wrap my whole hand around the forend) I would highly recomend the bc tac to anyone looking for a forend system to mount a reddot to.

If your a rear mount kinda guy, yeah the dustcover mount is the way to go, only thing I personally don't like is the fact that it's so close to your face it obstructs your field of view more so than having it at the front of the gun.(keeping both eyes open and scanning the field while aquiring next targets and shooting the current one)

Any thoughts on what co witnesses best for a red dot on the foregrip, and the rear dustcover mount for a magnifier? I am with OP in trying to figure out what I wanna do as far as optics, and keep changing my mind. want a red dot, but would really llike some minute magnification as well, just cause my 40+ year old eyes don't work as well as they used to :)

Have literally changed my mind on what I want at least a half a dozen times in the last 2 weeks, too many options, and all seem to have there definite shortfalls.....

I don't think that Bonesteel ships to Canada do they? They claim to be the lowest mounts out there though. I have had no issues with my NEA mounts, and for that matter, the FAB ones have always held zero for me - even when screeming hot.

The side mount will also maintain zero when removed, so it's not mandatory you leave it on while cleaning. I have a Burris AR332 mounted on mine, and it looks to hold zero (Within an moa) after being removed and re-attached countless times. That's just my experience, but I can't see how anyone would see any different. Just for anyone reading the post down the road. I still think the railed cover is the better option, as the side mount brings the optic up fairly high. Bloody expensive for what it is though

How about the side rail, pre-installed on many VZs?

What fits that specifically? I know CSA sells their own slide-on mount somewhat like the Russian POSP mounts. Any others fit? Do you need to remove the rear stock to get it on/off?

Hmmm.

I found it maintains zero well, but sits too high for anything but a super low optic, like aimpoint micro, trs-25, or deltapoint. I love iron sight retention though, and I run fiber optic irons on that gun.

Red optics, of course. See Corwin, east wave optics, Westrifle etc... If you use the czech issue folding stock, you need to remove it to slide off the optic, do to the rear sling loop placement, but like I said, you can squeek the rear cover by... just.
