I was just looking through some pics and noticed that some guys mount their red dot above the mag and others bring it back close to the BUIS. Are there any advantages or disadvantages regarding either placement? As usual, thanks in advance.;)

The idea of mounting a red dot further forward, so you can get a bead on your target faster without having to bring the rifle closer to your face.

So I assume (trying not to be stupid) that the longer barreled rifles get them mounted closer to the rear?

best thing to do is try it yourself, I find that having the red dot further forward my eyes doesn't really have to adjust it's focus that much, so it is faster for me to acquire the target. also having a sight further back means I have to bring the rifle closer to my face which will create a bigger blind spot.

almost 100% of it is personal preference.

With the sight mounted further forwards, you get more of a "bead" type effect with less (visible) movement of the dot, and they seem to get on target faster.

With it further back you get more open space with the housing being less noticeable (not as big a deal with 2-eyes open shooting).

I like to have my red-dots about mid way along the rail... just the most comfortable way for me.

Check out what position you like it in most, and keep it there. There are no downsides to having it more forwards or further back.
