I got a great deal on a new Baikal IZH 18mh single shot in 7.62X39 last summer and have had it out once so now I am thinking of putting optics on it since the front site seems to need a V notch screwdriver to adjust which is a PITA.

I shoot iron sites so this will be my first scoped rifle and I know very little about scopes. The base on the receiver is very short and it was suggested to me to use an airgun scope moumt. Thats fine, now when it comes to picking out the scope what do the numbers mean ie 3X9X40 etc?

Second question, for the Baikal owners is the front site adjustment that hard to do? Do you need the V notch screwdriver or am I missing somthing?

Thanks,
Cactus

The problem with all Baikal single/combo gun is they did not make or import a proper mount for these, what idiots! The guns are great, but they should have milled an angled cross slot on the mount to recieve a proper scope mount that has this design to stop mounts for slipping forward! The only thing I would do is buy a low mount full one piece airgun scope mount, and drill a hole in the rifle mount so you can screw the scope slippage screw down into this recess , good luck, dale Z!

As said above re the mounts. As for the question about scopes 3x9x40 that means a variable magnafication from 3 times to 9 times with an objective bell (larger end) of 40 mm diameter. The larger the objective the more light gathering ability so better to see in low light conditions. (to a point)

I've drilled a hole in the rib on my Baikal SxS double rifle to accept that recoil pin, but honestly don't think that would be necessary on a 7.62x39 from a recoil standpoint. If you're worried, then try attaching the scope mount so that it's front edge abuts and is stopped by the front end of the scope grooves. That would work on the SxS...I don't know about the single shot.

Don't go overboard with the scope power. The power and range of that chambering don't call for much more than a 1-4x20, IMHO. A small scope like that won't overload and unbalance that light little gun, and will have enough magnification for any shot you'll be taking with that round.

Post some results when you get that gun shooting. I've heard good things about them, and the price is sure right.

When I got mine from Epps I ordered a scope mount and they sent one along that works great.
Damned if I can remember the make and it's sitting in my gun room at the cabin 5 hours from home. :(
Call Epps and ask what they suggest.

I bought a riser type mount for mine from Marstar, but they don't sell them any more.

I don't see the need for any special screwdriver for the front sight. I'm able to easily push down on the spring loaded lock with a small metal object, then turn the adjuster what ever direction you need to.

Just mount a standard 4" Weaver base onto the existing integral base and use low rings - like I did.

I have used weaver 22 rings with 3/8 groove. Might try and find he narrowest rings that will fit for a 3/8 groove base as most baikals have a very short mounting length. I believe b square might make a base for them and then it will standard weaver rings.

B Square works well, about $24 D&l Airgun sells them

Thanks for the tips and advice guys.

The airgun scope mount is on order and when it gets in I will have it installed along with the scope properly at the local gunshop. I am going to give the front site one more try and use somthing other than my thumb to hold down the spring and raise the lock in the meantime.

Thanks for the scope information as well, good to know what the numbers mean.

Hey Dale, I thought that was strange as well, buying the proper mount from the dealer where I got the gun wasn't an option,

Jamie

Hey Jamie it is not only Baikal that does not offer proper priority mount for there guns, Toz, ans Slavia are non existant too! Good luck and let me know how it works out, cheers dale z!

I drilled and tapped mine for a 63B Weaver base. Works great and the four 8x40 screws will certainly hold it in place well enough. Regards, Bill

I bought this from Lake Huron Rod and Gun for 40 bucks. Its from Sun Optics and seems to fit tight and secure. Going to the range this morning! I will cut the extra lenght off after it's tested!

The only thing I find to be objectionable is the height. A man with a short neck might have trouble seeing through that scope. Regards, Bill

I agree with Leeper. Affixing a weaver mount like he suggests, is by far the superior solution, except that it's not "no gunsmithing", which seems to be what's putting people off of it - they want something you can just bolt on. For the weaver mount, all you (not necessarily a gunsmith) have to do is drill and tap 2-4 holes. Cheaper, much less prone to lossening, and at a height that you don't need to me a mutant to plant your cheek on the buttstock and look through the scope.
