Mounting an optic to a Browning A5?

I have a friend who wants to mount a red dot (NcStar) sight to his Browning A5, but is at a loss as to how to do it. (His eyesight now demands a sight he can see). He has a base for the sight, but the receiver is too thin to accept a tapped hole to mount it. He's thought about mounting it to the barrel rib, but there doesn't seem to be anything on the market that allows that.
Has anyone got a solution? :)

If his eyesight demands it, he would be better off to buy a Remington 1100 and mount it on it. The 1100 is very low on recoil and the action is thick enough to drill and tap and install a top mount. You can also buy a no drill and tap mount that uses the two cross pin holes for mounting a very solid base.

Mounting on the A5 is a nightmare. Why bother? It can be done with a steel base by soldering and reblueing. An expensive "semi-permanent" solution.

Nothing can be mounted on the barrel!

SM12 Browning A-5 12 ga Black $49.95

The ASM-12 mount for the Browning Auto-5 (A-5) is a rugged, good looking, high quality mount for a rugged, good looking, high quality gun. Designed to absorb the recoil generated by the shotgun's operation, the "vee-way" centers the mount down the bore line. The strong double bolt mounting attaches it rigidly for an accurate platform on which to mount your scope or electronic sight. The shotgun's bead sight is visible on standard barrel models and the pleasing satin black finish makes the mount a nice addition to the venerable "A-5".

Thanks guntech...that's great info! I'll pass that on to my friend.
Very much appreciated. :)

Take a look at the post above. I was not aware of this mount for the A5. It is the way to go!

B-Square also makes a saddle mount for the Auto 5. Part #16205. Rings are included.
I can provide it at $79.95 cdn plus shipping which would be about $6 or $7.
