Mounting optics on 870

Get it drilled and tapped to put a weaver base on it.I found this is the best way to go especially if you want to put a side saddle on it.You can get other mounts wich use the reciever pins to hold them in but then you cant add a saddle mount.

You can also get a mount from Brownells. Instead of drilling and tapping through the thin metal on the top of the receiver it puts 6 hole on the rounded edges that are thicker making a more secure base. I have installed a few of these and was very impressed. It is a DA-MAR shotgun scope mount. Stock #483-100-001. Very strong mount.

only get it drilled and tapped if its going to have the scope or red dot mounted all the time...

the best option is a saddle mount or side mount. these are quickly attached and removed. mine holds zero surprisingly well after i completly remove it from my gun and put it back on afterwards. just remove the 2 pins, put in the 2 screws and your set.

this is a weaver side mount. $55 after taxes from the local shop so you can probly get them for less than that.

The absolute slickest rig I've ever seen is the Doctor Optic scope and mount made for it by Police Ordnance. Well beyond my budget, but definately on my fantasy list.

870 Mount

This is my second attempt to post this message, so please excuse me if it appears twice. My buddy and I both bought 870 fully rifled deer guns for the GTA shotgun area, these are dedicated guns for deer. He mounted a saddle mount which to my eye was ugly (but it worked). I tried a Tasco side mount on my 12 guage Mossberg smooth bore deer gun but to my eye it did not look right (Anyone want to buy it?) I subsequently drilled and tapped the Mossberg and did the same with the 870 ( I think a Remington 760 rifle base). All this drilling and tapping costs more but looks better. After 7 years and probably 40 Lightfields fired, I have no problems with the mount or the scope. Several deer and one bear have had real problems with this combo.

I tried a OEM Remington saddle mount on my 870. Trailing edge of the saddle on the ejection port side almost rubbed my hand raw when I shot slugs with it!! I brought it back to the store and told the guy if he could sell to do it. BTW, you can still see under the rail and use the bead sight if you want which I thought was pretty good. Anyhow, I'm back to the good ol' factory bead until I decide whether to tap the receiver and mount a rail or to put on a set of ghost ring sights.
