Hey fellas, I have a left hand Savage 114 chambered in 7mm Rem mag, what are my options in mounting a scope, I have a one piece picatinny rail on it now and I hate it, it's too nice of rifle for that, my problem is the center of the front ring is almost a inch away from the rear hole of the front base would be, any ideas

Perhaps even old school leupold windage adjustment bases with zee rings/inserts. I find that many if not all of my savage rifles allow for better scope alingnment using this old school standard. This allows you to center the scope optically with the barrel, and will allow you the maximum windage and elevation adjustment. As soon as you are turning the turrets for windage you are loosing your optimal scope adjustment with the locked in weaver style fixed bases. Not a big issue with new scopes as they offer lots of adjustment, but when I tried using an old scope with 20 min total adjustment...you really see the difference. Also, if you want to gain some elevation, you can shim the bases with 10 thou shim stock to gain 10 min of elevation. The Zee rings allow for the movement in the scope and voila...you have now 10 min to play with. All the options come with pros and cons...this is just one that I have liked. My two C.

leupold won't work either, I am just trying move the scope back and look decent, a picatinny rail looks like crap on my rifle

Is it me? or do Savage Long action rifles have an extra-long distance from ring to ring? I had a 116weatherwarrior and had a heck of a time getting any rings to fit a scope to allow proper eye-relief. I ended up having to grind out a v-shaped section out of the base of a set of extended rings to have enough room to mount the scope. There was just not enough room to mount a scope. (I tried a bushnell 3200 , a redfield revolution, and a leupold vx2 and none of them had enough room to put the scope where I wanted it to avoid getting "scope-eye".

I can' t get any dimensions of talley web site

what dimensions do you want? I mounted a Zeiss HD5 with 50mm objective and I used Talley 1" rings that are the extended high rings. They gave me about 1/4" clearance between the scope and the barrel.

trying to move the scope back, not up
I just told you what I used on my Savage long action to get proper eye releif . Common sence would tell you that if I have 50mm objective and used high rings and you have a 40mm objective or what ever you have you would need a med or a low ring. Why don't you take your rifle and scope down to the local gun shop and try a few different rings and see if you can find something that fits you. I have no idea of what scope you are trying to mount so I have no idea of what eye releif you have on your scope.

I tried a 402 weaver base for the front and 46 for the rear and I still have to move my eye forward to pick up the cross hairs

So what make and model scope are you trying to mount. I find it hard to beleive that the Extended Tallys won't work because those rings will allow you to mount the scope farther back than any other ring. So if that is the case then your only other option is to use a pic rail

when the scope is mounted on the pic rail, the center of the front ring is 3/4 of a inch away from the breach opening, scope is a bushnell 3-9x32 older buckhorn

with Tally extented rings the back of the fron ring is 3/8" in front of the breach opening. and the centre of the front ring is 3/4" ahead of the breach opening. This is on my Savage model 111 long action. If your scope only has a 32mm objective then get the low rings

ya, my front ring has to be mounted over the breach, correct me if I am wrong, I don't think there is such a thing as a Savage model 11 long action, that would be a model 111 would it not?

sorry I missed a 1 . Well if your front ring has to over the breach opening then you have really no other choice but to use the pic rail. Only other option would be to get a different scope either a scope that isn't a compact like yours or on with extended eye releif

I have a 114 stainless in 270 win and when I put my new Bushnell custom (4-12 x 40) on it I had to get a longer front base that moved the slot back over the breach slightly. I had an old Bushnell sharpshooter on the gun that had a longer tube and when I held the new scope up I could see that I was going to have the same problem you're having. When I talked to the guy I go to for this stuff he knew right away what front base I needed. Both bases are weaver and the rings are weaver, I think med high grand slams. I can't remember the number for the front base off the top of my head but I will have a look tonight. That guy goes to Arizona for Jan - March otherwise I'd just call and ask him.
