I'm having trouble with a 96 that has been re-done in 22-250, med barrel, custom stock, anyway med. height rings are too low, the bolt hits the scope. i tried high rings but i have turned the adjustment all the way down and it still shoots 2' high. i bought a shim kit for the bottom of the rings from Burris but with the smallest shim in the kit the ring screws are too short. i tried using a couple pieces of stainless steel banding basically sheet metal in the bottom of the rear ring but it's still the same. i tried three scopes, a 3-9x50 3200 bushnell, a nikon 6 x 42, and an old tasco 4 x 32. the latter two come close but still 6'' high:mad:. can i just get a higher weaver rear base ? if so which # will give me another 1/8'' in height?

Well - I assume you mean a 96 based mauser action? And you have the correct bases? (45 and 55 IIRC- see Weaver website) And the rings are the same height?
Chances are your rear receiver bridge has been ground to remove the charger hump, and too much metal was skimmed. I'm not familiar with the Burris shims, I assume they seat under the base. Its easy to get longer screws from any gunshop - get a few extras, you'll need them. Try for a correction of about 1/16 in.

i don't think anything has been skimmed off but you never know .the Burris shim kit has shims that fit in the bottom of the rings, they are plastic and half round, you have to cut them in half to fit the scope in the ring. the smallest in the package is about 1/8'', i'll go to SIR and see what they have in stock for a higher base or just try longer screws, thanks for the help.

It's pretty standard for M96 bolts to have to be "bent" down by a gunsmith to avoid hitting the scope. Sounds like you've got an original straight bolt. These guns were not designed to be scoped (back in the 1890's). They do scope great, but having the bolt bent is standard for scoped rifles. I've got two, both with bent bolts, and medium rings are more than enough. When buying an M96 that you plan on scoping you've got to specifically look for a bent bolt. If you check out Tradex Canada site for example, all of thier ads for M96's will specifically state "bent bolt" if the bolt was bent to accomodate a scope. If the ad doesn't say that then you've got a straight bolt and good luck scoping it. Any competent gunsmith should be able to bend your bolt to suit medium rings no problem, but now you've got to fork out extra $$$ youd didn't want to.

The Burris kit only works with specific Burris rings, as they fit inside the ring - not sure you have the right rings. I'm talking about shimming the complete base with a brass shim.
