mounting scope problem

I recently bought a Bushnell Trophy to throw on the Savage Stevens 308 to see how it holds up. As I go to put it on, I'm noticing the scope tube is short.

I have Weaver #46 bases front/back, and while the scope will go on, the rings sit on nearly the extreme ends of the tube. There's about 3mm of play on each end(6mm total)before the scope flares out.

Will this screw up the scope tube in any way?? The eye relief is okay, with the scope in this position. Or do I need those extension bases?? Thanks in advance.

As long as there is a little room you shouldn't have a problem. Eye relief may not be so good though, when you climb into your hunting gear. You would have more flexibility with a one-piece base.

Weaver also offer extension ring sets for short scopes on long actions. Weaver rings usually screw up scope tubes anyway... it is cosmetic scratches and dents on the outside...
