HI everyone,

As a new member, new license holder and soon to be new owner of a lovely CZ 457 Premium after a deal done with a member here I wondered if anyone has any advice on mounting a scope to this rifle?

As you can see the CZ 457 Premium has iron sights mounted. The rear is removable but I do not want to remove it because as someone new to the sport I want to hone my skills on iron sights as well as using a scope. So my question is does anyone know which rings I would need that would allow me to mount the Athlon Talon 4-16x40 to the rifle while also maintaining the iron sights?

I am considering adding a picatinny rail to the dovetail which would allow me to easily pul the scope so that I can practise with the iron sights and then to easily reinstall without requiring a new zero when I then want to use the scope. I can see myself wanting to play with both options for the first few months at least so having the flexibility for this I think would be fantastic. Yes this adds weight and I would not do this if my intention was to hunt which, right now, it is not. When I get to that stage I would likely be moving up to a centre fire platform anyways and would have an entirely new setup built specifically for that purpose.

Is anyone able to help me figure out what the best mounting options would be for this setup so that I don't end up spending a small fortune on mounting rings for the one rifle that I currently own?

Thanks in advance everyone!

Dan

You didn’t mention how far to the target etc. If you went with a rail you could buy Burris Signature Zee rings with the inserts. The inserts will allow you to compensate for the variables

If you want 0 MOA why not just a set of rings?
I was hoping to have them quick release which I understand is not possible with the dovetail base. Perhaps I am wrong? I feel maybe I am overcomplicating this. Thank you for all your help with this. Do you know which rings I should get if I stay dove tail to ensure that the scope fits over the iron sight?

Warne may have quick-release rimfire rings.

There are calculators for ring height online. You need to add the height of the iron sight by which it goes above the top of the receiver.

A quick hack to approximate if your scope will clear the rear iron sight: take any pic rail you have, mount your scope in the rings you have, put it on pic rail, and then hold the whole assembly by hand on top of the receiver. You will easily see if the iron sight interferes with the objective. This would be close enough to a CZ-457 specific pic rail that may differ by 1-2mm in height.

Amazing! Warne do have quick release rigs for a dovetail mount! Perfect, thank you! My issue is that as a newbie this is my first rifle and I have nothing at all, buying it all for the first time and hoping to get it right! Will try and find a ring calculator online as you suggested. Thank you again.

As long as the scope clears the rear sight, you don’t have to worry about the front site being in the way. The front side post will disappear and won’t be seen in the optic, especially at the higher magnification. Looking at the photo of the CZ and the athlon it appears the Avalon has a 44 mm front objective bell (I had to convert the measurement. I have never seen that in inches before.) medium rings and a rail should clear it.

tht rear sight is an obstruction for a proper height scope mount, may have to look at having it quick-release also
if it is held on with screws, it would be pretty easy to have the proper torx screws and wrench along to remove as required
the front sight hood might be visible in the scope, but likley won't obstruct the view much
