I plan on loading Bullet Barn flat nose 170gr. 30/30 in .308 brass with subsonic loads . I think Trail Boss is the bulkiest powder - would be nice to have as much volume but stay subsonic
Anyone done this & have a recipe ?

Tried trail boss but never had any accuracy ot of that stuff.
Cast boolits has more cat sneeze loads that can be loaded in a lifetime.
A few faves
4.5 to 9gr unique
4.5 to 11 red dot or imr red
4.5 to 5.5 gr titegroup
Note I have no chrony so I can assume some are sonic.
All rounds have a report, as much as or more than 22lr.
Heavier the boolit the better.
Size matters.
Neck tension is critical
Fillers are a waste of filler.
They are not moa type rounds.
Very high in fun factor and can be addictive.
Good luck

Trail Boss is easy to use and I’ve always had good accuracy with it to 50 yards, not really going to shoot these loads further than that. Check the website, there are loads and a TB formula to use

I make subsonic .308 rounds using Red Dot. I had trouble finding Trail Boss and through my research found quite a few people in the States recommending Red Dot. I would strongly suggest getting a chronograph otherwise you have no idea when you have developed a load with an appropriate muzzle velocity and you run the risk of getting one stuck in the barrel. I have a Savage with an 18 inch barrel (1:10 twist).

I use 165 grain round nose flat point (no gas check) from Bullet Barn and started off at 10 grains of Red Dot and worked my way down by 0.5 grain increments. After a little tweaking I settled on 5.7 grains of Red Dot. I chrony'd 10 rounds and it averaged at 1055 FPS with a spread of 31 FPS. My rifle is zeroed for 50 yards for hunting with my regular loads. With subsonics it is zeroed for 25 yards and is slightly low at 50 yards. I just ran 30 rounds through my rifle last week. By no means is it as quiet as my Norinco backpacker loaded with CCI Quiets but the noise level has been significantly reduced and there is no supersonic crack.

One big concern with filling the case with so little powder is the risk of a secondary explosion. I cut cotton balls into 4 equal pieces and put a piece into each casing after I put the powder in. It acts like a wadding and ensures the powder is up against the primer. I do not drill out the primer holes and use regular large rifle primers.

I strongly suggest you do not start at my powder charge. Start higher and work your way down. I think a chronograph is essential to do this properly. Also consider how full your casing is and consider secondary explosions. I chose cotton because I saw some bad reviews regarding using filler like cream of wheat.

I have used similar bullets with 10 grains of Universal Clays in 7.5x55 for my K31 with good results. Something similar should work for .308. This should be supersonic (I haven't chrono'd it), so you may want to work down.

I have had my 30wfc with coated cast bullets down in the 700fps range with a very small amount of titegroup. I mainly use unique though. I also use unique with cast in 30-06

Believe it or not these loads are used in Europe for all sorts of game ...at close ranges
And there are other reasons too but .....but.....but ....but....well I just won’t say
It’s big over there believe it or not

I haave found the best powders to be shotgun powder (red dot or Unique, or 700X) or 2400. 2400 will work from subsonic to quite powerful.

With 2400 start with 10 gr and move in either direction for your purposes. No fillers needed.
