I wanted to hear some opinions on the legal ins and outs of copying the serial numbers of my shotgun on another part of the receiver so I can open up my loading port more (which would wipe out the original serial number) for better quad loading.

The response I've received from the RCMP is that you are good to go.
I was informed that on a non restricted they didn't really care.
I took a picture of the receiver with both serial#'s on it just to cover myself if it was ever brought up in the future, but I can't see why it ever would.

Really you should call them yourself and get a direct answer, as the info you receive about legal matters on a discussion forum is worth as much as you paid for it.

Thanks I'll have to make the call myself just for CYA purposes, but atleast now I know it's worth looking into.

I did called them 3 yrs ago when I got my 1301 Comp, and the lady on the phone transfered me to their LAB Tech, and the Tech opinions is not favorable, even mentioned to him that the SG needs to be repaired and the only way the repairs can be done is to move the serial #. Its better to call them again and ask for a written approval or proof that its legal to do so.

I think your issue is going to be the vagueness of this:

Tampering with serial number

108 (1) Every person commits an offence who, without lawful excuse, the proof of which lies on the person,

(a) alters, defaces or removes a serial number on a firearm; or
(b) possesses a firearm knowing that the serial number on it has been altered, defaced or removed.
Marginal note:punishment

(2) Every person who commits an offence under subsection (1)

(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or
(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.
Marginal note:Exception

(3) No person is guilty of an offence under paragraph (1)(b) by reason only of possessing a prohibited firearm or restricted firearm the serial number on which has been altered, defaced or removed, if that serial number has been replaced and a registration certificate in respect of the firearm has been issued setting out a new serial number for the firearm.
Marginal note:Evidence

(4) In proceedings for an offence under subsection (1), evidence that a person possesses a firearm the serial number on which has been wholly or partially obliterated otherwise than through normal use over time is, in the absence of evidence to the contrary, proof that the person possesses the firearm knowing that the serial number on it has been altered, defaced or removed.

And that there is no definition of "lawful excuse"

Good luck, and as Repete said get in writing

Called yesterday regarding a 1301 Comp. Gentleman I spoke too was very helpful and understanding. Said it was no issue. He suggested engraving the new location before removing the old location and said it was a good idea to take a picture showing both locations. Even emailed me letter stating the legality and requirements with no issue at all. Was actually a pleasurable conversation.
