My range is trying to make our IDPA matches more realistic.
How often is the target just waiting there to get shot?
We need moving targets for outdoors
I have been tasked with getting the moving targets.
All the targets I have found are made of metal that need shrouding here in Canada.
The CFO makes it difficult.
Does anyone know where I can get CFO friendly targets that do not need to be shrouded?
We have done some of the DYI moving targets with limited success.
We have some money and would like to purchase some professional moving IDPA or IPSC targets.
Moving shotgun targets for our multi gun stages would be nice. Any ideas on this would be welcome.

We use a moving target system which uses a trolley that runs on rails. Moves using a winch/cable system. Control box provides stop, start, reverse and variable speed. Efficient and reliable. Used 100m and closer. Up to 6 cardboard targets mounted on 2x2s.

Shrouding is typically only required when tagging steel. It is to control/contain the splash. Cardboard targets do not need a shroud.

Your CFO might be different. But ours forces all targets to be within a meter of the berm though. Cant have one floating out in the middle of nowhere.

Do cardboard targets attached to steel movers with wood slats need shrouds?
meaning a steel moving mechanism with cardboard to shoot at.

Just had a range inspection.
Shrouded steel plates were mounted on 2x2s which are fixed to steel "crows' feet" stands. Nothing was said about the crows' feet. They aren't more than 8" high, though.
Stands could be wooden, if necessary.
If the inspectors decide that steel in a target system could cause a ricochet, they will expect it to be removed or shrouded.

Right, so if you have a track that moves perpendicular and you cover it by putting a ground baffle so it is just the cardboard sticking up above the baffle.

Our system runs parallel to, and just in front of, the backstop. The moving carriage is below the level of the range floor. Only the actual targets are visible.

This system really does work the best and offers endless variations to MD's designing stages for IDPA stages. A google search should lead the OP to enough sources to satisfy his needs. Multiple target arrays suggest movement but recent rule changes (fault lines) have reduced shooter target transitions while shooting so I would expect more clubs to look to moving devices.

Smally21 - pretty much summed it up. :>)

The entire premise of IDPA is to generate realistic scenarios and xourses of fire often duplicate real-life events. .

Comedy gold.... Lol.

That said... Here's one I built.
Exposure time can be adjusted.

i've used a few targets by this company. https://movingtargets.ca/ they hold up fairly well and there is zero steel in the shooting arc so even the strictest range allows them without any shrouding being required.

This is exactly what I was looking for. Pre-made no steel moving plastic IDPA IPSC targets. They are much less expensive than inmotiontargets.com . I am thinking about giving this one a try. https://movingtargets.ca/product/3-swinger-mk3-moving-target/ Our club shoots both IDPA and IPSIC. Any opinions on if they are legal for IDPA and IPSC? They put me, the new guy in charge figuring this out. If I put 2 penalty/no shoots on the front and the target in the back I think it would work. It looks to be the most fun. After realism fun takes a close second.

I would like to thank everyone for their help. We ended up getting 2 moving targets from https://movingtargets.ca/
So far so good. We left them out in the rain. They still work.
They work as described

600$ is kinda crazy for that though dont you think? It is just a simple arrangement of PVC fittings.... it does make me want to build one for 3gun matches though :D

Yeah, steep. I also can't see the PVC holding up too well to a barrage of bullets.

Agreed

Typically it is the vertical portion holding the target that gets chewed up. Could easily replace those PVC parts with wood strips. That should help it out.
But it would only take one bad shot to basically wreck the entire mechanism
