Hi all. I'm moving to Ontario from the US. Can someone tell me what I'm allowed to import with me when I do move. I know that I have to get a FAC but what rifles can I bring with me and not have a problem? I have a couple that I am not sure if I can import them such as my Bushmaster M4 clone and my Springfield Armory M1A. Any info would be most helpful.

Don't. That's my advise.

No problem getting them into Canada once you have all your liscences. The problems comes getting them out of the US. Isn't there a law about exporting "assualt weapons"?

Welcome, Mike. The FAC is now called a PAL. It comes in 2 versions, restricted and non restricted. You need the restricted one. As for importing guns, you are OK with everything except what the government considers "prohibited" firearms. These include short barreled handguns, AK-47's and derivatives, and a host of others. The list of prohibited guns is here:

I would think the export permit could be easily obtained. Find a FFL with export expertise ( do a search, I remember some members had mentioned a couple of FFLs who are good at doing this.) Since the rifles are 16" over and quite sporting, I dont' think you will have a problem.

Good advice, but I think I would start with a quick call to ATF. I'm wondering if they will require an export permit if he is moving his entire household.

As the others have said once you get you PAL you should not have any trouble importing anything that is not considerd "prohibited" in Canada.

The firearms will have to be registered of course and since you are importing them they will have to be verified.

Verifications are done by volunteers approved by the Government and check to make sure the firearms is as described on the registration, i.e. serial number , make, model, calibre, barrel length, etc. There is no fee for this.

For what are called restricted firearms (handguns and certain rifles), once they are imported you can not take them anywhere without what is called an ATT (Authorization to Transport) usually issued for 3 years. This is an additonal piece of paper that you have to apply for. In Ontario to get this you have to belong to a gun club, take the club safety course, wait for a probationary period (duration varies) and then the club will apply for your ATT for you. This process can take from 3 to 6 months but once done renewal is pretty much automatic (again done by your club).

Welcome to Ontario :)

Approx what area are you moving too?

Are you going to stay here permanently?

What kind of shooting do you do mostly?

We can let you know where shooting clubs are, etc. There are lots around.

That's what the export FFL will handle.

It may be worth the call. On moving south, a friend was able to file the paperwork with ATF to import his guns personally, no FFL required nor importers stamp required. It's possible he may be able to do the same to export his own guns, without requiring an FFL.

I figure it's worth a phone call.

An individual can get an export license for one-off exports of firearms, for example selling one out of country or moving. Department of State and Department of Commerce handle it depending on the firearm in question, call the ATF and they should point you in the right direction.

Consider whether your move will be permanent. It may be easier to import the guns to Canada than to bring them back to the States should you ever wish to return with them. Personally I would leave them there and get new stuff up here. FYI you can get brand new norinco M-14s for $399 your ar would be harder (more $$) to replace though.

he doesn't need an FFL to export his guns. He can bring them with him when he leaves the country. He has to have his PAL first, then he pre-registers the firearms while still in the USA. then when he moves up he brings the guns with him (and ammo for that mater). He will need to get the guns verified within 30 days of arriving here.
Another way to do it is for him to get his temp PAL that can be issued as if he was just coming up for a visit. This will also allow him to bring his guns in. If he can't get his PAL before his move, leave the guns in the USA, but bring the serial numbers etc with him. Then get his PAL here pre-register the guns, ship them to an FFL in the nearest state to him, drive down, or fly down pick them up and bring them back. Again they will need to be verified.

hey Marlin Mike...welcome to canada!! Bring as many guns and 10 rd mags that you can get your hands on. This website is a great resource for everything gun related.

Marlin:

Where are you moving FROM? ... And what part of Ontario are you moving TO?

I'm in Ottawa, and would be glad to sit down with you over a beer (my treat) and give you a quick overview of the Canadian peculiarities... I cannot comment on US law, but the Canadian stuff is fairly straightforward.

of course, you'll have to go to school again and re-learn how to spell- up here, we speak and write english
