Hi all,

I currently live in Canada but I AM a U.S. Citizen with a full on U.S. Birth Certificate. I may be moving down to the U.S. for work in the next couple of months (not exactly sure where yet).

I know there has been some hubbub lately about re-importing U.S. milsurps. Does this include a humble 1903a3? It was my father's when he moved up here to Canada and I would sure hate to have to leave it behind. So my questions would be:

1) Is it possible to bring this firearm into the United States as a private citizen NOT for a resale? Again I am currently a U.S. Citizen.
2) What is the easiest way to do that? I most likely will be driving to this new position. Can I bring it across myself as long as I declare it and fill out the proper forms and such? If not is there a reputable company that can transfer it over there for me?

If possible if you could provide a link with your answer to the actual government regulations just so I have something to cite if I need to go through with any of these options.

Thanks everyone. As always you're a tremendous resource!

as far as I know.............

If you do not have paperwork saying that you acquired it in the USA and took it temporarily into Canada then bringing it back with you is a no go

Hmm sadly it was brought up here almost 40 years ago back when all you had to do to bring a firearm between Canada and the States was throw it in the trunk and drive so no paperwork sadly.

well then your southern gubberment is not going to allow for it...........

You can try to file a import permit under the new laws and explain your situation, but sadly it will be dismissed and denied....Thank you Mr. Bush and company.......

The Springfield 03A3 would fall into the category of a U.S. marked firearm.

No way to import back to the United States. That's why U.S. milsurp firearms are sometimes cheaper in Canada, there's no way to export them to U.S. market where they would bring more money.

The good news is, in terms of 03A3 Springfields you'll soon be in the land of plenty.

Sell you 03A3 up here and use the money to pick up a new piece down there. I think a Luger with the regular barrel length would be on the top of my list.

It's a good plan, but it won't be the family gun.

Crappy situ, sucks that you might have to give it up.

I'll be happy to give it a loving home, and it'll be here ready to hand back over when you move back. Condition being that I get to shoot it when I feels likes its.

You could try to get one of the import forms from the govt/rcmp, It says on the website it could take 12 weeks to do so, but it may be worth a shot if you have the time.

You need to get in contact, or onto the website of the BATF and or the State Department. All of your questions should be answerable by those two agency's with regards to importing Milsurps back into The U.S.

It is possible to import firearms into the U.S. but as already stated it's impossible to import U.S. marked firearms.

So while it would be possible to import something like a K98k (it will be vandalized by import stamps) it's impossible to import an 03A3, Garand, M1911, or other U.S. marked firearms. There are no exceptions to this rule that I'm aware of.

If you think you might be back in Canada at some point in your life, leave the 03A3 with a friend who's licensed. If you won't be back, you'll have no choice but to sell it. Sorry for this bad news.

this only applies to lend lease firearms ,was my thinking. most people, including some at the BTAF think the Johnson cannot be imported . but they are wrong ,the johnson was not a Lend Lease firearm . Was the 03A3 ?

That would be great if this turns out to be the case. Does anyone know for sure the answer to this?

Your citizenship is irrelevant. The U.S. Gun Control Act of 1968 outlawed re-importing all Lend/Lease firearms. No 'hubbub' recent or otherwise about it. If you took it Stateside, 40 years ago(1974), you did so illegally.
Page 186 doesn't have anything to do with it. A 1903A3 isn't an NFA rifle.
You won't have any trouble selling an '03A3, depending on condition, up here. You will not get the money they're worth Stateside. They're not as easy to find there anymore either. I think the CMP is sold out and has been for several years. Didn't look though. Last I saw, they still have a few, but either in poor condition or really great condition and therefore very expensive.
