Hey future fellow Manitobian's!! I am being transfered to Winnipeg and will be looking for beta on big whitetails and always want to find a gopher patch. I don't expect to be there until first week of september. I guess all the scouting I have done this summer around here is not going to do me much good this fall. Do I need to find friendly farmers to get land access, or is there crown land to hunt in the area? I would drive of course to get to a spot, say within 2 hours from Winterpeg proper.......

I would imagine you'll miss this season...I don't think you can buy a resident's license until you've been there for more than 6 months. You'll have to look up the regs for non-residents and the criteria to be classed as a resident...

10-4 on the Cougars downtown...mainly come out at nite...lol...lol. Lots of crown land around. I hunt 1/2 hour away from the perimeter and take every year. No gobblers though.

Not sure about Manitoba but Alberta doesn't have that requirement. I was able to get my resident WIN status and license with tags as soon as I had something to show them to prove residency.

He might be OK, this is what it says in the Manitoba regs...

Resident
a Canadian citizen who has his/her home and is ordinarily present in the province immediately preceding the time that he/she purchases a licence

welcome kurt!!! the winters are no different here than in b.c..... heh, heh, heh...;) shoot me a pm, I'm always looking for a partner for deer, as my dad's parkinsons got worse, so he doesn't get out much anymore... my deer area is in the carberry foothills, about 1 1/2 hours west of winnipeg. No road hunting, mainly walking the fence lines back in the hills. If your interested, let me know. I also go icefishing pretty heavy as well...

I have lived in the Yukon, worked in Northern BC, lived in Regina, Fort McMurray and lived in 9 other places, I am no stranger to winter. Not a fan of winter, but no stranger. I was hoping to stay away from weather like that and keep enjoying the fruit I grow in my own yard. Over 80 safeway bags last season..... no such luck. Bad economy and a reasonable job offer out there makes me a Manitoban.
I like the sound of hills, but was not aware of any in Manitoba. From the 10th floor of our hotel, all we saw was the curve of the earth in every direction, not unlike Regina. I will miss the mountains and clear, clean rivers and lakes every day I am sure.
I am down with ice fishing for walleye for sure.
What kind of upland bird hunting do you have out there. Hun's? Pheasant? Sharpies? I have a dog that likes to hunt as well.....he's a good boy. He will retreive waterbirds as well.
Keep in touch.

well my friend... you haven't been to the duck mountains then. Certainly not the rockies, but ugly when your chasing elk from ridge to ridge... upland is mainly sharptails and spruce hens, I do travel to north dakota for pheasants. I don't fish at all in the summer, but spend every possible moment ice fishing. Curve of the earth... real funny transplant boy...:p

It all sounds good, I'm in.

Lots of game to be had in manitoba, I almost hit two deer a week on my way into wpg, I have counted over a 100 in the same field, day in day out, Goose hunting can be great, ducks gonna be good this year!!!, Chickens think the numbers are gonna be down with the wet spring and tons of yote's and big wolves this year. Had 25 -30 turkeys in the yard by cabin every day for months!! Until the bears showed up, they killed all but two! the bears are big this year, no one is hunting them and they are eating alot of veal too out this way

We have huge amounts of crown land within 2 hours of Winnipeg, you really shouldn't have a problem finding somewhere. For a good idea of where it is, start looking at sat images on Google Maps and find the areas that aren't divided up into nice squares. Then get a landowner/topo map from the Map Bureau and you're good to start exploring.

I saw about 8 deer on a 30 mile stretch of highway around Vita a couple weekends ago, although I was being driven to the hospital for an eye injury at the time, so it is possible that there were many more that I did not see of the 8 I did see were entirely a fabrication.

Great, thanks fellas. See y'all in the bush this fall....... or hopefully I won't see you as I like to have some space to myself.....

Vita, is where I am

My family has a cottage over in Piney (well, about halfway between that and Vassar). I used to find it an exceedingly dull place to go, as sitting around in a cabin surrounded by swampy bush is hardly thrilling when all your buddies are on a beach or off fishing from their cabins. So I took up shooting and now its not so bad. Can't go to a cabin around Gimli and start shooting guns (not without the RCMP showing up anyway).

You aren't the guy that works for Hydro that came and fixed my power a few weekends ago, are you?
