Evening all,

I've done some online research and called a few clubs but I haven't found a decent place where I can really stretch the legs of my Remington 700 338 Lapua.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

John

Welcome,

There are a variety of ranges templated for the .338LM that I am aware of. They range (no pun intended) from 100 to 300m. I believe the MPRA has access to the St. Charles Range for something a little longer. Besides that, there are lots well known shooting spots that have ability to stretch things out a little further.

Hello and thanks for replying!

I called the MPRA but the military doesn't allow any calibres on their range other than 308 or 223/5.56 or at least that was what they explained and has been my experience on other bases.

I can always take it to my folks place in Saskatchewan to get out to 500 yards and beyond but that's a 10hr drive, so finding something closer and easy to hit up on a day off or weekend would be awesome.

You could go to Lake of the Woods Gun Club in Kenora. 500, 370, 200 and 100 yard ranges, including some gongs, covered shooting area, golf cart option. All much cheaper than what you've looked at so far.
Plus handgun ranges, trap and sporting clays.

I sent an email to the CFB yesterday when I first posted and this is what I got back.
Good Day

Membership is $25 per person for the year for serving military members, peace officers with law enforcement ID, retired members drawing a pension and dependants of serving military and law enforcement members anyone else is $50 a year. All members other then serving military and peace officers require a Rec Centre membership. A Club Only Rec Centre Membership works out to $56. Proof of Rec Centre Membership is required before a club membership can be given out. You can get this membership from the Facility Desk at the Rec Centre Building 90 680 Wihuri Road.

In the summer we shoot outdoors at St Charles Range about a 10 min drive west of the base on Saskatchewan Ave. We shoot at Minto Armoury on St Mathews Ave in the winter. Unfortunately the air handling system at Minto can be temperamental so this can limit it’s use. Minto is a pistol calibre only range, St Charles is a outdoor pistol and rifle range. Due to the template of the range any calibre over 5.56mm requires sentries on a road at the north end of the range property. Because of the extra people and coordination required we don’t do this often. As we have a few members interested in shooting large bore we are looking for someone to coordinate this activity but until someone steps up large bore shooting will be limited.

Range hours are usually Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 1800 - 2100 (shutting down at 2030 for clean up). Saturdays hours vary a bit but are usually from 1200 - 1600. If you will be showing up late you need to send a email to the club website or post on the club FB page. We also have a closed Face Book group for the club and we encourage our members to make use of it. It is also the most convenient way to communicate last minute scheduling changes to the members. If all shooting is done before normal closing the RSO will shut down early. All RSOs are volunteers and we don't expect them to sit there if no one is using the range. We aim to have the range open these hours but as we are at the bottom of the range use food chain sometimes we get bumped out. An email goes out monthly with the hours of operation they will also be posted on FB .

Guests are allowed one time only. If they wish to come more than that they are required to get a membership.

The club has guns available for use by members, A 9mm Browning Hi Power,9mm Sig 226, .22 cal High Standard pistols and a AR15 with a .22cal sub cal kit so it can be used with 5.56 or .22LR ammo. These are available most Saturdays. Requirements for use are that the shooter provides factory ammo. Please no Russian manufactured ammo like Barnull as this ammo can cause excessive wear on the guns. No reloads are allowed in club guns. Also if you wish to use the club guns please email your request no later than 0800 on Saturday mornings. If we don't receive a request the guns will not be brought to the range.

We are primarily a handgun club. We do make use of the rifle ranges but that is dependent on RSO availability so there is no guarantee when this will happen. If your primary interest is large calibre rifle shooting I don't think we are the club for you. You might try the Manitoba Provincial Rifle Association. Their primary focus is large and small bore rifle shooting and also use St Charles.

If you have any questions please let me know.

Hope this helps. P.S. Winnipeg is awesome. I don't live there but I visit often.

I am a member of St. Charles and we have all been advised early in membership that 8mm is max and certain cartridges and loading within the 8mm max must also be evaluated for range template. in addition no muzzle brakes are allowed. Please see MPRA site under full bore section for restrictions on st. Charles. When you are here feel free to contact us for a visit. We usually shoot mid range (500 or 600 yards ) on Wednesday and long range (8,9 or 1000)on Sunday morning. Most shooters are f, ftr or open. Most common calibers at this time 308 and 284.

Hope that helps and you can email me directly if I can provide any additional info.

Seven Sisters range as I posted above remains the closest club allowing 338.

West Rifle Range at Winnipeg Revolver and Pistol Assoc is templated for .338LM, but that range is only 100 yds. It's 5-10 minutes north of Winnipeg on McPhillips.

Selkirk is only about 200m. I know you can't shoot 50bmg there, but other than that I'm not sure what's allowed or not
