Lookin' superb. Lots of sittin'nthinkin' time I'll bet. Don't know if you've done the finish yet. For the wood parts you could check out EZ Liner bedliner spray from Can Tire. I used it on an airgun project, gives a really nice surface texture, variable by number of coats. Also on my Tommy gun I painted the metal with brake caliper paint, very tough matte finish. I can relate to being laid up for medical reasons, just had foot surgery, can now only think and plan the next project. Fred
 
Metalbender, I have seen your tommygun pics and it looks awesome! I just assumed it was anodized. How has the paint held up to use? If I can save some bucks and get a nice durable finish, I will. How did you prep it?

The paint has done well. If you bang it, of course it will chip but through normal use so far so good. I take it out to the range for a little show and tell and run off a mag or two. Some guys wanted their pics taken holding it. You will no doubt have the same positive responses from people who realize the work and thought that goes into such projects. Prep was media blast, spray with brake clean, paint when dry. Nothing special. Powder coat would be another option but gets into places it shouldn't causing interference fit as it adds a fairly thick coat. Fred
 
You should shot-coat it in black on one side to see what it will potentially look like. Any color for that matter...
 
Pretty much. I bought a used mill and this was my first project. I learned most stuff on the fly. I made some mistakes and had to do the odd part twice but now have enough knowledge to get by and have a decent finish on the parts. My neighbour is a CNC guy and would explain some of the problems to me (usually after I made them) but mostly it was trial by fire. I am really enjoying working with metal. Sweep a lot of chips but they are not like wood dust that gets into everything.
 
That's great! Much respect for learning something like that on your own. Its a skill I would like to try someday - lots of practical applications. And, I reckon you could find a few buyers for your projects to help fund more machine tools.
