Uses a 7.62×38 SP-3 type round:

The gun wasn't silenced, rounds were. The one on the right is what a fired casing looks like. Fired at about 650fps.

Thanks Syphen. I nearly lost my mind with the bayo clip!

Not speaking Russian, I'm still confused if the rounds are using a small powder charge or if they are spring loaded... Russian dude kept saying gazza (gas?) when he was explaining the round itself.

7.62X38 is interesting and seems to be a "specialized" type offering. The flat nose looked to be armour piercing rounds, although they weren't silent.

WTF? Assassins Kit from the cold war? Is 650ft enough to puncture the skull? Why on earth ball fmj projectile?
Why not? FMJ penetrates better. Pointed .30 caliber bullet that probably weights around 150 gr and you're questioning if it would penetrate the skull really?

EditL cool videos, never heard of those guns

...uh, yea. I guess I was. Not having shot many skulls lately with something that produces 650 ft lbs of energy, I was inquiring if there were stats on this sort of thing. Seems kinda light weight to me. I suppose you don't approve of my question or find it silly/naïve? Perhaps you can explain what this thing is used for? Speak Russian!?

The cartridge type is known as a "captive piston". It uses a modest amount of smokeless powder, that drives the piston, imparting push to the bullet projectile. The powder gases have to be contained 100% inside the case, so the volume and pressure can't overwhelm the case to piston seal, otherwise it would be loud like any handgun.

Ballistically its very low power, very short range. None were intended as defensive because they just don't have even close to enough power or range. All were intended as silent assasination weapons. This particular Soviet design was meant to be used at contact distances, and the bullet is straight from an AK-47, so that afterward people would conclude the targeted victim was shot with an AK or SKS...not a tiny concealable handgun purpose built. So security would be looking in the wrong place at the wrong suspects.

Would it work? I'd guess yes. I'm sure the Soviets would have tried them on animals. And Afghan prisoners.

They also had a different design, a little like a Makarov, semi auto with at least 8 rounds. Before that, the OSS had a dart launcher using this principle that mounted to an issue 1911a1. And there were rumors of a CIA 12g cartridge launching a big dart silently.
