With the IDF adopting the MTAR as their standard firearm are there any plans on canadian imports with a longer barrel or will the TAR-21 variant be the prevailing pattern for all current and future imports of the Tavor?

Interesting.... my thoughts is that if they do bring in the X95(MTAR), i have a feeling it will be the 9mm model, both with a restricted and non restricted length barrel, and the current Tavor will represent the 5.56 line..... just my opinion.

Honestly, as tempting as an X95 would be - I'm not sure the prospect of a $4,000 5-round 9mm SMG gives me that "warm and fuzzy" feeling. And the X95 carbine is only 5cm shorter than the Tavor CTAR, so again - huge premium for a restricted firearm (PDW AR15's are incredibly compact for less than 1/2 the price). I'll admit that from a collector's standpoint it would be pretty cool. But I imagine the novelty would wear-off fairly quickly...

IDF issued X95s are semi only, hopefully this should help with the importation.

IWI should be able to offer a 18.5 inch just for us like the TAR-21, the overall size will still be shorter than a 10.5 inch AR15. I have seen X95s using Glock magazine adaptors also.

In theory... although it still has to run the gauntlet through the RCMP labs. Just ask those folks still waiting for their FN SCAR-16s how that's working out for them... (and don't forget the "review" of the ACR that put that in limbo for close to a year as well).

As mentioned above, you're only gaining 5cm and the slightly different body styles... I'm not sure how you justify a $1,300 premium for that (just FYI, when inquired with CanadaAmmo a year or so back the estimate was well north of $4,000 for the X95).

I wholly agree that the import process is a massive undertaking and would require a great deal of commitment and dedication from both importing and exporting parties (as well as the support ofthe firearms community). The MTAR as adopted by the IDF is refinement of the tavor design the few major upgrades (placement of charging handle, reduction of the height of the gun and other minor adjustments such as the weight) not only allow for a fully free float barrel and improved ergonomics but do not alter the major components of tavor far from the original design. A 9mm MTAR seems like an unrealistic import candidate but given that the Tar-21 has been in canada for several years an upgrade to its feature set shouldnt lead to a protracted legal wrangle and would make the tavor much more capable

It really comes down to this: are you prepared to shell out close to or in excess of $4,000 for a restricted, 5-round 9mm compact bullpup design? Because otherwise, this whole discussion is somewhat academic...

Sorry but i think I might have caused some confusion regarding the nomenclature I'm using and my own ambiguity. The MTAR as i called it refers to the 5.56x45 evolution of the original tavor design which was adopted by the IDF n 2009 and called the Tavor 2 to distinguish it from the original . I was mainly using this posting as reference. If you scroll down you can see the user pretorian669 references the Tavor 2 as the MTAR so I was just aping his nomenclature for the gun without realizing most forumites associate that term with the 9mm special forces version of the Tavor 2. Blaxsun you were right in your statement that a 9mm version of the Tavor 2 would be difficult and uneconomical to import into canada. I was just wondering if we might ever see the Tavor 2 (5.56x45) in canada given that it shares, what i assume, are the same internals as the Tavor.

Just to avoid any future confusion, the "MTAR" (as you refer to it) is actually called the X95 (not a Tavor Micro or Tavor 2, either). The challenge isn't necessarily getting IWI to manufacture the X95 with an 18.6" barrel, or even the necessary export/classification hurdles through the RCMP labs - but rather, the $4,000 estimated price tag. At the end of the day, you're gaining 5cm in overall length, some new styling and ergonomics - but at a substantial premium over the existing Tavor.

It's a neat gun, though. And I think if it could be imported and sold for under $3k (inclusive of the 9mm conversion kit), even as a restricted it would probably garner a lot of interest.

Just unlocked that weapon on BF3? lol. It would be cool to see in person though.
