Mueller APV 4.5-14x40 or Simmons .22MAG 3-9x32 or Nikon Prostaff 3-9x40?

Any experience with these scopes? It's going onto a Marlin 60SS & there's quite a difference in price between the Simmons & Mueller & Nikon with the latter two being significantly more $.

I want a decent scope but I don't want to spend more than my scope needs. Target/varmint in the 50-100 yrd. range.

You forgot Weaver and Sightron.

True I did but I tried to narrow it down to a shorter list & the more I look at the more complicated it seems to get.

My main requirements were a decent quality scope with at least 32mm objectives, adjustable power, a reasonable amount of eye relief (3" or better), in silver finish and readily available in Canada or better yet, Manitoba.

I have no experience with any of the 3 but the majority of guys over at Rimfire Central seem to like the APV.
I seriously considered one but now looking at a quality fixed 4x power for my rimfire requirements.

I have a Mueller APV on my 10/22, and I really like it. The quality of the glass is excellent IMO. I got it from Phil at whitefalls.ca..... :)

Yes I was talking with Phil about the APV as well. I do like the AO feature of it although I've never owned a scope with AO.

What rings did you use? I don't want to buy any decent scope and then have to deal with junky rings that either come loose or change alignment in temperature extremes.

I've got the Simmons on one of my .22s. My expectations were modest, but turns out it is an excellent scope. The AO works fine, it's quite bright, has adequate eye relief, holds zero and the turret adjustments are well marked and positive. I only use this rifle for up to 50m, so I can't say how it would be at 100. However, if 9x is enough magnification for your targets I don't know why it wouldn't be fine.

As for rings, my favourite is the Burris Signature Zee. The plastic inserts allow you to nearly zero the scope without using the dials. This saves the scope's internal adjustments for fine tuning and/or for different ranges. They also eliminate scrapes on the scope tube. Zees clamp down tight on the mounts and never come loose. Just be sure you get the right height for the scope/rifle combo. Zees are a little lower than some makes and I usually find "highs" the best. To discover the height of any rings go to Brownells and look them up. Unlike the manufacturers, Brownells actually gives the height in inches and metric.

Phil just dropped off a Silver APV 4.5-14x40 AO for me. Now I'm just waiting on my Burris rings to arrive from Mystic Precision so I can mount it.

Phil is an excellent guy to deal with!

I also picked up a very reasonable Simmons .22MAG from P&D so I can compare the APV to the Simmons & also to the Bushnell I have. All are very low cost optics and the APV gets the nod for a quality looking scope.

I'm sure after I try them all, the APV will come out on top and will be going on my 17HMR. But then again who knows which I'll like the best.

Let us know please.

Any chance to try them yet? OK, I realize it is really cold out there. :)

Man I wish that was the case, but we still have 3 feet of snow on the ground and I'm waiting for my buddy at the farm since we both have the same gun/scope combo (his is black/black) and were going to compare them.

Hope it will be in the next three weeks and I'll definitely post the results.

I have never tried the others, but I recently bought that very same Simmons(in black tho) and it seems to be working very well. Clean, clear and nice to use. feels like a more expensive scope.

I wish the center part of the reticle was a bit finer tho, but I guess its not really designed for 200+ meters ;)

I was shooting it mainly at 50 and 75 meters, and its great for that.

I took it out to 200 meters, and the scope is just fine for that. .22lr out of a Norinco, with a rookie shooter? Maybe not, but I could definitely see clearly where I was missing :)
