I received a new Mueller APV scope from Phil at White Falls Hunting Supplies yesterday, installed it and bore sighted it on a tack driver Brno ZKK 600 25-06. Don't get critical allready--I know Brno never chambered the 600 in 25-06---I did.
I compared the scope at dusk last night with a 2-8 Bushnell Scopechief VI, a Weaver 2.5-8, a Bausch & Lomb 3-9, and a Leupold VX II 3-9, and found it as good as the best of them. I was focusing on a dark evergreen tree line with one barely visible 3-4 inch brown trunk behind the front rank of trees, so I'd say it was a pretty good test.
Eye relief was compared using my home-made gauge, and at 8 power all the scopes were virtually identical.
Off to the range this afternoon/evening with about 40 rounds of handloads. I was on paper right off the bat, and found the windage and elevation adjustments to be consistent and 100% repeatable, but I was expecting 1/4" clicks and actually got something closer to 1/2 inch. Maybe I read the specks wrong, but so far haven't even looked back for them because it just plain doesn't matter. The adjustments are so much better than most that there's just no comparison. You make the move and that's what you get every time--at least so far.
Sure beats having to pound the scope with a rock to jar things into place. LOL.
I have a Leupold 3-9 on my usual "go-to" hunting rifle, and have found it totally usless looking toward the rising or setting sun. Without the sunshade the Mueller is much better. With it there's no problem at all.
The A/O is calibrated perfectly according to my eyeball, but is not as easy to be sure with as some much higher end scopes. I've played with two that were so good you could use them as a rangefinder out to 300 yards or so, and that would be tough to do with the Mueller.
The Mueller APV seems like a very good scope at an excellent price.
All in all I'm a happy camper, and only time will tell whether or not it will stand up to real heavy recoil. I had intended to put it on a 6 pound 45-70 for test purposes, but my friendly neighborhood gunsmith has not delivered the finished product yet. My "go-to" cannon kicks pretty good too, but since I haven't had to touch the scope on it for several decades I just hated the idea of taking it off. Kinda like "If it ain't broke don't fix" with a bit of superstition thrown in.
Really good service and first rate communication from Phil. Dealing with him has been a treat indeed---and NO! I'm not on commission.
