Just got back from three days of hunting in region 3 around Clearwater, BC. Saw quite a few does/fawns, black bears but no bucks. We hunted in the lower areas, open meadows/cut blocks, and higher elevations as well but did not go up into the alpine. I have now heard that Mule bucks will stay up in the alpine until they start to rut and then come down and make themselves more visible. Is this accurate? When does this typically occur (ie-after snow, late oct. ???) Any mulie tips would be great as I am new to hunting and would like to put something in my freezer this year.

Thanks

Jeremy

You may hunt for many seasons before you get the opportunity at a legal animal. Patience and time in the bush. That Clearwater area is sure nice country. Good luck.

My family hunted there for mulies for many years (many years ago). Back then you could hunt into December and that is when they would see the biggest deer. Keep getting higher (or farther back) to find the bucks earlier.

Good luck.

Until the rut or snow the bucks will live up in "sheep" country. You need to get up high and glass. If it is warm look on the north slopes. If it is cool look on the south slopes. If there is lots of hunting pressure, find the ugliest hardest crap to get into, and that's were you'll find them.
