Mulie vs Whitetail......Which One?

Never having hunted Mule Deer and being new to the west I am really intrigued at the thought of shooting a Mulie. Which species do you feel is better eating? Mulies or Whitetails?

Both good.

Shoot one of each of similar size if you can, and from similar circumstances (buckbrush, or pasture, or grain fields, etc) and you decide.

I've shot a fair few of both, and can't tell you which is which without reading the freezer wrapper.

Treat it well, it'll feed you well!

The best wild meat is MOOSE by far can beat beef on a good day....Then elk if if you get a really decent one,Then whitetail,corn fed man it's some primo meat aswell! Iv had mulie,did't care for it much,seemed tougher and not as tasty as whitetail....But that one kinda turned me away!! Sure love the big RACKS though.....can't get enough lol
 
Rutting mulie buck if you like that gamey taste LOL
However, alphalfa fed mulie does are good eating.

I actually prefer mulie doe to white tail buck
 
Whitetail is the better eating of the two, and if it fed on alfalfa it is that much better, even old mature bucks in the rut. Probably because whitetail are far more intelligent and mulies are dumb.:evil:
 
At one time I thought I preferred whitetail, but a lot of that was judged by rutted up bucks. After years of a multitude of non trophy tags of both species, many shot early with a muzzleloader I'm not sure I can tell the difference anymore.

Couldn't agree more.

My son shot a mule deer buck fawn at Camp wainwright and you could cut it with a fork. I shot a 4 point mule deer buck in Wainwright in late Nov. and it smelled "rutty" so I figured I would get it all made into sausage but when I was cutting it I just had to knock off a few steaks and cook em up. They were good so I kept back some steaks and a few roast from that buck.

I hear people say that mule deer bucks get uneatable in the rut but I think it is mostly about the smell of them and they really don't taste bad to me.
 
I like both of them for dinner, but i prefer mulies to hunt especially the big ones out on the prairies out by Drumheller got a really big one by dinosaur provincial park last year. it all depends on how you cook the meat.
 
I won't shoot a Mulie buck past November 1 any more. Yeah, yeah, "it's all in how you handle the meat/don't use the same knife on the tarsal glands as on the rest...." - I've heard it all. I've also had one too many extremely stank mulies - cooking it could make a preson gag on the bad ones.
 
depends on WHAT you are comparing.

White tail are far superior in mathematics and things like physics where as mulies are more artistic and less intellectual, they prefer to be more "creative"

This can actually be proven by the mulies tendency to hop or bounce as they move about their daily routine, almost like music is playing all the time.
 
If you are eating rutted up bucks, they aren't prime eating no mater which species. if you're eating young does or fawns, they're all good. Early season bucks are good from both species too. Common sense if you have enough experience.
 
I think there is more difference in the taste of two deer because of their diet than because of their species. And either way, it isn't difficult to cook it in ways that make it impossible to tell.

i agree, diet and not species makes the difference.
 
I too think it is almost irrelevant. I would bet I could serve a venison meal and you could not tell which deer it was. Diet, a clean kill of an unstressed animal, and care of the meat after the kill are far more important factors in the quality of the meat than is the type of deer.
 
Only whitetails here in Ont unfortunately. I'd love to hunt mulies one of these days.

As far as eating? M'eh... I like my deer in sausage or stew. Moose steaks for this guy.
