Well #1 son is on a bird this morning for the high arctic, he's gonna spend the next 4 days (likely only one day required) bagging himself a "book" muskox. A buddy of his booked and put 1K down then couldn't make it so he asked James to take the hunt so his 1K wasn't lost to the outfitter. He initially asked me if I wanted it, but I declined saying I already have a book muskox and I wouldn't want to spend the money, as it might cut into African funds later. Besides who needs or wants 2 muskox on the wall........

Here's the pics of #1 son's muskox as promised.

That is on my short list of animals I want to go after. What outfitter is he using, if you don't mind me asking? I'm hoping to book in a couple years and just doing some research myself.

We flew up and shot 4 a couple years ago. The hunt and travel can be very weather sensitive. I wouldn't mind doing it again, the only problem being that for everything that gets done again there is a corresponding something that wouldn't get done at all.

That is exactly my thinking DL..........can't waste what little hunting time I have left doing "do overs"

'Looky.......I hope so, don't we all wish better for our kids than we were able to do?

Phil........weather is SUPPOSED to behave, but it is the high arctic, so who knows....................

I've only ever had it from two different animals but have to say that the meat is awesome, very mild. And if you cut steaks from the big leg muscles you can get HUGE steaks.

Good luck to James, is he hunting with a pointy stick or a rifle? You really do need two muskox heads. One on either side of the African buffalo or, considering who I'm talking to, hung alternately with the buffalo heads.

BUM he's hunting east from Tuk on the mainland...........pretty much the same area I hunted them a few years back. Western Arctic, not eastern............

Boomer......he's using his favorite all time rifle, the one I bought him for his birthday many years ago.........300 RUM Remington stainless SPS, he loves that rifle and it kills sh!t as far as one can see.................and he is very good with it !!!!

No reason that country between Tuk and Paulatuk shouldn't be every bit as good as Kug. I feel confident that we'll see a new world record B&C musk oxen out of that area in the near future.

That's pretty much the same area I hunted them. I was just off the coast at a place called Muskox Creek, about halfway between Tuk and Pauly and 10 miles inland. I got there from Rendezvous Lake on sled though, hunting with Billy and Eileen Jacobson. The ox had been around the lake a week or so earlier but had moved north by the time I got there so we had a 6 hour sled ride one way, just to find some. I wasn't too bent on the numbers (B&C score) so I took the biggest bull from the first group we saw, he turned out to be good, right around 110", certainly no new world record but a good respectable "low book" bull.
Billy said I should have been there the week before as he had one hanging around by his camp that he figured would go 125-130, a true monster, but alas it was not to be for me as #2 son was born just 2 days before I left for this hunt. Not a really good time to "get out of Dodge" but she forgave me in time.............

That depends if she was on time or not. If she was over-due how is that your fault?

Nice one! Greenland for combined Muskox, Caribou and Arctic char sounds fun to me!

Muskox in the Arctic Archipelago and Greenland are the "Greenland" subspecies. The ones on the mainland are "Barren Ground". BG are bigger in body and horn than the Greenland variety.

Mine taped out around the same as Douglas'. I saw one that was taken by a bowhunter from Texas (one of the hunters in a group with Jack Brittingham, a big hunting video guy) that, if it didn't break the record, has to be damned close.

These are the P&Y record bulls...tied at 127 2/8"!
