Muskrats in SK

Was out gopher shooting after work the other day in the Lloydminster region on the Sask side. The landowner told us "shoot any of those damn muskrats if you go by the slough, their everywhere!"

We never went by the slough and shot gophers all afternoon, but curious I looked online later and I couldn't see anything on eliminating them as a pest. Can a person shot them on private property if they are not a land owner?

They have nice fur and are supposedly good eating. That is all I have to contribute.

X2. It is against the law without a fur bearing license. As for being on the owner`s land with their permission...not sure. Even at that, I think the landowner would need a deprivation tag in order to wipe them out.

They are rats you are supposed to shoot them. They ruin damns and dugouts by undermining them.

I know a few people buy a fur licence and go after them varmint style with 22-250s, 204s etc. I plan on eating one this fall and seeing how they taste. I keep hearing they're great.

Muskrats are a fur bearer to harvest them you need a license, the season runs from Oct 15 to May 31. Non-residents cannot get a fur license in Sask. Just a note Muskrats averaged $13 each at the last fur auction.

Have you actually seen a cow break a leg in a muskrat run...I grew up on a Alberta farm and never seen or heard of it, also never see a horse or cow break a leg on a gopher hole but i guess it is possible.

Never have myself but I do know a few people who eat them. They say they're good eating. The meat looks good when they're skinned.
I'd rather trap them than just shoot them. Fur's worth money.
