Question: heavy recoiling sporting rifle already has Magna porting done. Very cute little slits that do nothing but look cool. Since they are back a bit from the muzzle, about 3/4", can the barrel still be threaded to accept a KDF brake?

Thank you respectfully in advance for any advice.

After 30 years of shooting a couple rifles and a .454 Casull that are Magna-Ported and appreciating the difference, I'd have to wonder why you'd want to double-up? If you don't like the Magna-Port, then chop it off and thread for whatever, ...then tell us about the improvement!

Magna-porting is less visible but is also less effective although it is quite effective at reducing jump. Muzzle brakes are more effective simply because they vent or re-direct more gas. Now, both systems are most effective on rifles in which muzzle pressure is high (the 378 would certainly qualify) but in the end, venting is venting and it is doubtful that combining the two would result in much of an advantage over the brake alone.
Another point is that primary recoil, the reaction to the acceleration of a heavy bullet, is unaffected by any sort of brake. Also, very large powder charges add some inertia as well so recoil will still be noticeable.
Bottom line? I don't think combining the two would accomplish anything over an effective brake; I do think the addition of a brake to a rifle which is already Magna-ported would result in a significant improvement. This is simply because a good brake is much more effective than is Magna-porting. I have to add, if I had a Magna-ported rifle and wanted to improve recoil reduction, I would cut off the porting and install a brake.

A simple answer to your question is yes, but what is the caliber and the barrel length? I would probably prefer to cut it off and install a brake.

I don't like Magna Porting much... I have seen a lot of barrels with bore damage at these ports from dust/debris that has entered and a bullet fired over it. Often enough leaves visible damage.

Leeper and guntech, thank you for those detailed answers. My first idea was to cut the magna porting off and thread on a good brake. Then I figured if I keep the full length barrel for velocity and thread on a brake I should ask a pro. Now it makes more sense to just cut and thread. Now I'll have to research a good muzzle brake. Any suggestions anybody?

What would the barrel length end up at? I think the Terminator Brake would be your most effective.

X2 on Terminator brake. I have a friend with one on his 338 lapua and it feels like a .243. (it is a heavy rifle so that helps too)
I have an EM Precision brake on my 338 lapua improved and it feels like a .270
Fat bastard brakes are good too.

another option is to install a mercury recoil reducer in the butt stock of the rifle. no extra noise and helps with the recoil

Of course, it also messes up the balance of the rifle and reduces recoil only as much as that much added weight can. Recoil at 378 levels is aided somewhat by such measures but I really think a brake is the best option; especially if the rifle is relatively light.

Good call on the rifling damaged near the ports. Looks like a combo of welding and pitting. The barrel doesn't feel like it's been ringed judging by feel test on the exterior. But is visibly eroded in a ring like pattern. Time to chop and thread or chop, crown and go with a clamp on brake. No Magna porting in my future ever again!
