I just bought a new Ruger American Predator in 6.5 creedmoor and it come with a thread muzzle, and doing a little bit internet surfing last night and I can get a muzzle brake for about $80 deliver to my door, is this a diy install or do I need to bring it to a smith?

Yes, that works well, and allows precise indexing.
If I am fitting a brake, I will machine things so that the brake torques up against the barrel shoulder, properly indexed.
But for installation without machining, a jam nut, crush washer or peel washers will do the job just fine. A brake needs to be firmly installed - last thing you want is for it to come loose, and start turning.

Use the crush washer that comes with it... make sure your stock screws are tight, hold the rifle solidly in a vise with padded jaws. Screw the brake on, index it with the top as close to top dead center as you can. Crush washers will allow a brake to turn almost 360 degrees... it may take a bigger wrench... I also use grease on the threads and both sides of the washer.
