just bought a tikka T3 Hb varmint left hand stainless wondering what pros and cons on adding a muzzle break to rifle?brake made by pacifil tool and gauge.(V-brake)

Brakes are louder to anyone off to the shooters side, brakes are louder at the covered shooting range to everyone. That isn't really a problem except for those morons not wearing hearing protection.

Brakes greatly reduce recoil.

I have my 338 Edge, and my 700 Sendaro in 7mm Rm both braked. I wouldn't shoot the Edge without it. I also enjoy the Sendaro a whole lot more with it on. At the range, if it's busy I don't shoot the Edge, or I go to far end of the shooting line.

On 308 and larger, they can make shooting much more pleasurable. That`s considering you double up on ear protection and are not shooting from an enclosure/covered position.

I have bad shoulders. Without the breaks I could not shoot either my 338 Edge or 33 LM.

Like masonicshooter says on 308 or larger. Under 308 there really is not need.

I found shooting a brake with my 308 not that much louder. But i did use the yellow ear plugs made to reduce noise. Not the ones that try to electronically block it.

That's pretty normal.. unless something (like at a range) is bouncing the sound back at you, shooting with or without a brake is not much different in sound levels for the shooter... it is those in front of or to the sides of the shooter who suffer more from the noise...

Since this is the precision rifle forum - never a good idea to clean from the muzzle. A one piece rod with a bore guide is best.
In the field, or with a semi auto, use a cable pull through if needed.

A brake does protect the crown from impact/abrasion though.

I hear that brakes help protect the crown when cleaning from the muzzle end.

Be aware that depending on the cartridge, load, and barrel length, even a single shot with a braked rifle without hearing protection, can be loud enough to cause permanent damage to your hearing. I personally know one person that is living proof of this.

Brakes help in self-spotting hits, and are an efficient method of turning gunpowder into noise.

A couple months ago my .338 Edge's muzzleblast literally blew the handle off a plastic ammo box that was sitting on the bench.

Be aware that depending on the cartridge, load, and barrel length, even a single shot with an un braked rifle without hearing protection, can be loud enough to cause permanent damage to your hearing.

The individual that I referred to , had no issues at all with his hearing until after the brake was installed. The increase in noise due to the brake, was enough to cause him permanent hearing damage after taking a single shot without hearing protection while hunting with the brake installed.
