I am in the market for a new muzzle device on my new build. I have a Spike upper with S&J 10.5" barrel. The handguard is a Yankee Hill Machine company in Spectre length. I have been looking at the PWS CQB compensator as well as ATRS Eliminator as well. But I think both of these are going to stick off the end of the barrel and leave me a bit of gap between the muzzle device and handguard. Any thoughts on other options or guys running into the same dilemma?

I am also not opposed to putting something else on it either. Suggestions?

Brake, comp, suppressor

Well what are the pros and cons of each?

No offense, but you need to do a little research and then come back to this question. There is plenty of info here on CGN and on other forums about muzzle brakes, compensators and flash suppressors; enough to fill entire volumes!

Once you know what you want your muzzle device to do, come back and ask which one may do it well. ;)

Well to be honest I have done a bunch of research on the various options and watched a ton of reviews on youtube. But I do appreciate your comments so far.

My main purpose with the rifle initially is for plinking and close target. Not yet ready for 3-gun, maybe in the future after some much needed practise.

Brake, comp, suppressor

Well what are the pros and cons of each?

Brakes are generally for reduced recoil overall. Very loud but greatly reduce recoil. Good for long range shooting where a high volume of fire is not required.

Compensators are somewhat for recoil reduction (although only as a side effect of venting gasses out the side), but mainly for keeping the muzzle down and on target. Stuff like 3-gun where you want to get off a LOT of shots very quickly, stuff like the ARES Armor tunable compensator, or the LRB Arms compensator brake for M14 rifles; Has larger open ports on the right side to keep the muzzle down and to compensate for the "up and to the right" effect recoil+body position tend to has.

Flash suppressors are the most basic concept, and are just to reduce the flash signature of a gun. More important with shorter barreled rifle's where you have a lot of unburnt powder, they essentially mix air with the flash to cool it and eliminate or hide the muzzle flash. Some can have an effect on recoil but not by much.

Flash suppressors are the most basic concept,

Ha, I wish. It's just as hard to design an excellent flash hider as it is to design a excellent muzzle brake.

As info, flash hiders don't mix anything with anything. They actually work by reducing (and sometimes eliminating) shock structures formed by the combustion of propellents. Gas hits these shock structures, compresses and heats, then ignites oxygen in the air.

To the OP: I recommend you just use an A2 flash hider to start. They offers some compensation and decent flash suppression. Once you learn to shoot well with it, or you feel it's holding you back, then move up to a brake of compensator.

You just made my brain hurt! LOL

A comp, brake or the devices like the ATRS Elim/ Noveske pig would work well for you, although with the 10" you don't have to worry about directing gasses downrange like on a 7".

Most of us sponsors have at least a couple options for you to choose from.

Chances are you'll change it a few times while you own the rifle anyway LOL It always happens :D

Bayonet is what you want!

for 3gun or blasting one of the best brakes for the $ is the Jerry Miculek brake.

if money is no issue look at the triple tap or surefire.

for eliminating flash then the brake to get is the ATRS eliminator.

If your not putting our NT-4 Suppressor over the Triple Tap, honestly its not going to be worth the $ your spending.
It was designed as both a brake and sacrificial baffle for the NT-3 Suppressor (and works with the NT-4 we sell commercially down here).

Its made of Inconel (a Nickle Alloy) very heat resistant - and awkward to machine (hence the price).
Several other muzzle brakes will do exactly what your wanting without the price tag -- that said if your looking for a suppressor interfacing brake, which is verbotten in Canada for civilians...

Pick up a Yankee Hill Phantom 5C2. Best bang for the buck. When Fabsports get them in, only $30
I used it on my 10.5" Noveske. No issues with noise.
Be careful of some of the advice you get on here, they are only trying to sell you a product that they sell.(surprise)
