I've been looking for a muzzleloader barrel and haven't been to successful, I'm sure I could likely find something if price was no problem, but hope to find something in line with what Green Mountain has, unfortunately getting something from them seems to be a problem, their distributors here can't seem to get anything from them.
Has anyone actually made their own barrel. I'm looking at 50 cal. 1:28 twist from 4140 shaft, and plan to proof it, remotely done of coarse. I understand there will be significant cost, but in the end it maybe worth it.
Thanks
Cmass
Check the chamber, Check it again.

im guessing you know nothing about boring and rifling a barrel its alot of work ive seen it done the old way if you want a good way to lose weight that will do it

1 in 28" for a .50 seems odd most it should be around 1 in 60" or so

the cost will but for nothing when you can get one for much cheaper http://www.thegunworks.com/custprodgun.cfm?SubCat1ID=9&Cat1Name=Barrels these guys will make the twist and rifling depth you want oregon barrel co are the ones you want to look at

1-28 is for sabots and perhaps heavy for caliber weight conicals.. Bit of Pieces in BC brings in GM barrels I have a 1-70" ball barrel in .54 on my Renegade. Claybirds at 100 yards don't stand a chance.............Harold

Deal with Green Mtn directly if you can. In the US muzzle loaders are not considered firearms and the barrel should be exportable to Canada.

nanuk forgive the question but explain PRB. And part of what I'm looking for is, the boring and rifling machine seen on Oregon Barrels co's home page looks a lot like the machine at Guy Lautard page, has anyone first hand knowledge or hands on experience with a machine of that kind or similar

Contact any of the resellers of barrels, or do up the import paperwork (free, takes time, so not an instant gratification route)and order from Brownells.

Unless you want a life-long hobby with a steep and expensive learning curve (price out gundrills and pull tubes for the reamers you would need) as well as the need for a rifling cutter or buttons made to meet the twist requirements.

My read on this is that if you are asking these questions, you do not have the skillsets to pull it off. How are your machining skills? What is your budget? Is your goal one rifle for you, or are you going to become a barrel maker? The former is a fools errand, given the actual cost of a new barrel from a retailer, the latter is a whackload of dues to pay.

Oh. PRB. Patched Round Ball.

Cheers
Trev
